Artist, Producer, Windham Hill Founder Will Ackerman Receives 5th Grammy Nomination For 'Hearing Voices' Album Will Ackerman released his first recording of acoustic guitar solos back in 1975. This simple beginning led to Ackerman's creation of Windham Hill Records, a label which was virtually alone in introducing what became known as New Age music to the US. The label was so unique in concept and style that the majority of record stores created a Windham Hill bin for the label's offerings. Ackerman was also head of A&R for the label and the its sole producer until the mid-1980's, having signed and produced artists such as George Winston, Michael Hedges, Liz Story, Shadowfax and Alex deGrassi. Ackerman's own musical career now spans 27 years and 11 recordings. His latest offering, "Hearing Voices", is a measure of his musical evolution -- a guitar-centered recording which features voices in 11 languages. The album also sees Ackerman's first exploration of electric guitar playing. Ackerman says, "In nearly twenty five years of recording, I had never used the human voice; probably the most expressive of all instruments. These are the songs I would have sung myself, if I were blessed with the vocal talents of Samite, Happy Rhodes, Noah Chase, Jaya Lakshmi, Heather Rankin, Curtis King and Betty Mcleod. These songs are sung in many languages, and it is really the sound of the words and the subtle expression of the human voice, rather than the literal meaning of the words and the logical order of them, that inspired me. These pieces are a departure for me in some ways, but in their expression of simple human emotion they are consistent with what I have always hoped to create." John Diliberto's syndicated Echoes radio program listed "Hearing Voices" as one of the year's Ten Best. "Hearing Voices" has been nominated as Best New Age Album of 2002 for the 45th Annual Awards presented by the National Acadamy of the Recording Arts and Sciences. Voting member of NARAS should be aware of this special album! For more information contact Bob Garcia at 818 353 4807. AES LA Section Meeting January 28: "High Definition Audio" Mark your calendar. On January 28 the AES LA Section will be holding its next Meeting, spotlighting advances in high-definition audio. Here are the details: 96/24, DSD and Beyond: Adventures in High-Definition Audio. As the recording, broadcast and post industries transition from traditional CD-quality bit rates and sampling frequencies, there is confusion regarding the sonic virtues and operational advantages of new, emergent high-definition formats. Recorders and workstations can now operate at 24-bit/96 kHz, a replay format being offered by DVD-Audio and related consumer media, in addition to the one-bit/Sigma-Delta Direct Stream Digital (DSD) format used in the Super Audio Compact Disc consumer format co-developed by Sony and Philips. What creative tools exist for facilities that want to step up to high-definition audio, and beyond? The AES LA Section's January meeting will take a detailed look at current and future developments in 24/96 PCM-based converters, recorders and workstations, in addition to DSD-based systems being used on an increasing number of rock, jazz and classical music sessions. Moderated by Mel Lambert, Creative Director of Media&Marketing, the panel for the January meeting will comprise representatives from a number of companies offering high-resolution conversion, recording and editing systems, including Apogee Electronics, Digidesign, Genex Audio, SADiE, Sony and others. Scheduled participants include Roger Robindore, Manager of Quality Insurance, Apogee Electronics; Scott Wood, Senior Product Manager, Post Production, Digidesign; Kevin Brown, President, Genex Audio Inc.; Gary Rosen, Vice President, SADiE Inc, America; and Lon Neumann, Western Manager of Field Operations, Sony Super Audio Compact Disc Project. An extended question and answer session will allow audience members to quiz these individuals on the state-of-the-art in high-definition audio solutions. For more information please contact Mel Lambert, AES LA Section Committee Member, Creative Director, Media&Marketing at (818) 558-3924 ^BACK UP^ Crest National Begins First SACD Hybrid Disc Manufacturing In North America Crest National, a leader in the film, video and optical media industries, recently announced the commencement of the first SACD Hybrid manufacturing in North America. This announcement follows the partnership announced late last year between Royal Philips Electronics and Crest National, to develop a Super Audio CD (SACD) hybrid disc production line to be installed in Crest National's replication facilities in Hollywood, CA, USA. This represents successful completion of the first step of their agreement to jointly develop hybrid SACD production lines, and to roll out SACD into a mass-market proposition. Crest National's production line is now in full operation with a capacity of 3 million SACD hybrid discs a year with more lines to follow. This SACD hybrid disc production line is the first to be established in USA and increases the available hybrid disc manufacturing capacity significantly to meet the rapidly increasing demand for this new medium. Crest National's services also include complete post-production activities in SACD authoring. "Philips is pleased that SACD hybrid disc production is now available from one of the leading disc replicators and post production facilities in the world," says Jos Bruins, Philips' Marketing Director for the Super Audio CD format. "This is an important part of the next phase of the roll out of SACD into the mass market." "We are pleased that our partnership with Philips is playing a key role in bringing this exciting new medium to North America," says Ronald E. Stein, President, Crest National. "It is a further reflection of Crest's experience and expertise in implementing new technologies and bringing high quality products to the world's most demanding customers." SACD, Super Audio CD, developed by Philips and Sony, is the evolution to the audio CD offering ultimate sound quality in both stereo and multi-channel surround while maintaining complete backwards compatibility with all existing audio CD players. It uses the latest DSD (Direct Stream Digital) technology that delivers superior sound reproduction quality, with the ability to render all the nuances of a live performance. SACD has wide industry support from professional audio companies, as well as major music labels. There are about 850 SACD discs available worldwide with over 1000 titles expected to be available by the end of the year. Crest National is one of the world's leading media facilities with over forty years experience providing motion picture film, video, audio, language and DVD/CD services to major film studios, record labels, software companies and industrial clients the world over. The company has a well-earned reputation for developing new technologies including many industry "firsts" combined with an unwavering commitment to the industry's highest standards of quality and service. Atlantis' Studio A, an SSL 9080 J mix suite, was the studio chosen to host a new Connoisseur Records artist, Colin Blades. The album, which is due to hit stores in February, was Co-Produced by Jack Blades of Night Ranger and Damn Yankees fame, and Michael Lardie of Great White. Noel Golden engineered and Colin Miller assisted. Also in Studio Atlantis' A room was a vocal session for the upcoming film "Wonderland". The film is based on the true story of John Holmes, and the infamous 1981 quadruple homicides which took place on Wonderland Avenue in the Hollywood Hills. Starring in the film are Val Kilmer as Holmes and Kate Bosworth as his teenage lover. In life, Holmes was a fan of Gordon Lightfoot, often singing his hit "If You Could Read My Mind", which Kilmer has recorded for the film. Kilmer is no stranger to singing for film roles, as he also starred in "The Doors", where he had opportunity to display his vocal talent. Co-produced by James Townsend & Josh Ralph, Ralph also handled the engineering with assistance by Colin Miller. Studio B at Atlantis has been seeing its share of stars as well. The production team the Berman Brothers have been in recording the new album for Sophie B. Hawkins. Christian Berman has been engineering on the Trident 80-B with assistant engineer Zech Algood. Producer Jim Wirt also spent some time in studio B recording basic tracks with the band One Side Zero for their new record. Since parting ways with Maverick Records, One Side Zero has continued to write and perform, and is currently seeking a new deal. Jamie Seyberth engineered with Zech Algood assisting. In addition to hosting great sessions, construction is near completion on Atlantis' new ProTools Suite and 800 square foot lounge. The ProTools room features the new HD system and has a 10' X 12' iso booth perfect for dialog or overdub recording. The lounge includes a home theater, Sony Playstation 2, pool table, kitchen, and data center with DSL access. The XL becomes the sixth console to have been ordered by the internationally-renowned facility over a thirty year period, and will soon take its place in the control room of Studio A which features an exceptionally spacious live area with four isolation booths. Since its foundation in the 1960's, Davout has played host to countless headline artists from Maurice Chevalier to The Rolling Stones, encompassing every musical genre. Additionally the studio is widely used for orchestral work for films and albums, most recently recording the strings on the latest album for French rock legend, Johnny Hallyday. Enjoying a long and fruitful relationship with SSL France, Davout has all three of its rooms equipped with the manufacturer's consoles. Studio B has an SL 4056 G while an SL 4048 E resides in the control room of Studio M. "We always strive to balance our creative environment with appropriate advances in technology," said Oliver Kowalski, Davout studio manager. "With the addition of our new console - eight channels larger than its predecessor - we have a wide range of desks, each with a strong freelance following. The new XL provides even greater sonic integrity than the SL 9000 J Series. It's an incredibly powerful tool to create new sounds and its new developments in 5.1 mixing are really impressive. SSL has harnessed all the successful elements from the J Series and moved forward to address all our anticipated recording and mixing requirements." Joining the 80-channel XL in the redesigned control room will be a range of new kit to ensure that sonic quality is maintained throughout. New additional equipment will include Boxer T5 reference monitoring from Harris, Grant Associates, Bryston amplifiers, ProTools HD and a rack of Prism ADA-8 converters. Skyline's main room consists of the original 3rd floor studio with its substantial live room, ample isolation and updated control room. "The live room has been left untouched based on its renowned acoustics," Mover says, while the control room was updated to accommodate the Neve VR60 (with Flying Faders automation), and the recently installed George Augsperger main monitors. "The Augsperger mains are an exciting addition for attracting work based on their universal acceptance with engineers and producers," Allaire added. Demolition and construction have already started on a B room on the other side of the main floor, as well as a full blown Protools HD production suite to be occupied by the Boston production team of Steve Catizone and Leo Mallace (Gary Cherone/Tribe Of Judah/Chris Emerson), known as Mixmen. Quietly occupying Skyline's main room since July 2001, Steely Dan recently wrapped up working on their anticipated follow-up to the Grammy winning "Two Against Nature." During breaks in the project, Skyline has played host to a variety of other artists, such as Avril Lavigne, Matt Kramer (Saigon Kick), Brett Scallions (Fuel), Gary Cherone and Tribe Of Judah, Marius Muller Westernhagen, Down and Local H to name a few. "But those moments of rest and repose are important to feed the soul." Fortunately, Supreme Beings of Leisure (SBL) are back to help right that imbalance. With Divine Operating System (D.O.S.), the Los Angeles duo delivers a sophomore set of tunes imbued with whimsy and glamour. From the rush of wah-wah guitar and frisky rhythms that kick off the opening "Give Up," it's clear that SBL has taken an exciting turn on their second full-length. While Divine Operating System (D.O.S.) retains the jet-set flair of The Supreme Beings' previous work, many of these eleven new offerings are better suited to the dance floor than a chic cocktail lounge. DIVINE OPERATING Divine Operating System (D.O.S.) was written and recorded by Ramin Sakurai at his home studio over the course of 2001. "When you have everything you need in your bedroom, it's so much easier," he admits. "I can go in and out whenever I pleased, and capture the feeling or emotion at the moment it's happening." Ramin and Geri pulled in previous collaborator Suzi Katayama and her Love Supreme Orchestra. Having worked with the likes of Bjork, Prince, Garth Brooks and Incubus, Suzie helped create the lush classic 70's strings sounds reminiscent of Chic or the Bee Gees. Other guests include Bill Meyers (Madonna, Michael Jackson) arranging strings for the track "Catch Me", DJ Swamp (Beck, Crystal Method, Morcheeba) cutting and scratching, Sheldon Strickland (Dust Brothers, HOB) on Bass and Manoocher Sadeghi on Santur. All expertly mixed and enigineered by Ramin and his technical co-pilot, Jimi Randolph (Slave, Earth, Wind and Fire, Al Green). Supreme Beings of Leisure will be touring with a full band in support of their new release.
