The staff at Atlanta's Tree Sound Studios mixed with music's A-list this winter as the studio was packed with the likes of Andre 3000, Warren Haynes, and even the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes. Local rock radio station 92.9 Dave FM has started a series of live events, entitled Circle of Friends, to be held in the Cave at Tree Sound Studios. The inaugural Circle of Friends event featured the 23rd greatest guitarist of all time (as determined by Rolling Stone) Warren Haynes. Haynes was stopping through Atlanta with his band Gov't Mule, yet took time out from the tour to serenade the intimate gathering of approximately 100 radio show call-in winners with his solo acoustic set. Jamie Foxx broke away from being featured on such hits as Kanye West's Gold Digger and Ludacris' Georgia to put the finishing touches on his soon to be platinum debut solo album, Unpredictable. Foxx worked in Tree's Studio A first with producer Sean Garret (Destiny's Child, Pussycat Dolls) and engineer Orlando Rashid on the title track, Unpredictable, which features Atlanta's own Ludacris. Tree Sound's Kenneth Mount assisted on the session. The Oscar-winning actor (2005 Ray) also called on the talents of producer Polow da Don to mix tracks Do What It Do and V.I.P. OutKast's anxiously anticipated new record, My Life in Idlewild, will feature tracks recorded in Tree Sound's Studio A. Andre 3000 wore two hats for the track Cockadoodle Doo as both artist and producer. Matt Still (Elton John, Nelly) engineered the session and Tree's Travis Daniels assisted. Irene Cara, best known from her theme songs to the hit movies Fame and Flashdance, came into Tree's Studio A to work on her new project, Hot Caramel. The mix session was for the immortal Life in the Fast Lane, a cover of a vintage Eagles tune. Tree's Zack Odom engineered and Kenneth Mount assisted. Tree Sound Studios staff with Warren Haynes (center) Backstreet's back alright! Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell came into Tree Sound's Studio A to work on his solo project for Contemporary Christian label Provident Records. Mark Kibble (CeCe Winans, Pat Boone) and Dave Thomas of the a cappella vocal group Take 6 co-produced the tracks which include You Keep Giving Me and We Lift You Up among others. Kibble worked double duty as engineer and Travis Daniels of Tree assisted. Backstreet fans will flock to this record to hear Littrell's unmistakable vocal talents. The company's Studio A509 and production rooms at 509 West 38th Street as well as Studios A, B and C at the main 168 West 48th Street location have been busy with feature films of every genre. "Over the years many motion pictures have called on us for tracking and mixing," reported Right Track studio manager Donna Kloepfer. Right Track's A509 tracking room "Studio A509, the largest dedicated recording studio in New York City, is a favorite of feature-film producers and composers. They also enjoy our ability to follow through in our production rooms and in Studios A, B and C for a complete package of motion-picture services." Sony Pictures' production of Mel Brooks's Broadway hit The Producers, directed by Susan Stroman, did original score recording in Studio A509 with engineer Frank Wolfe. Producer Doug Besterman remained at Right Track/Sound On Sound for Digidesign Pro Tools editing in one of the company's production rooms and vocal overdubs in Studio A. The Producers & Engineers Wing of The Recording Academy held one of its industry roundtable events on Jan. 5, 2006, against the backdrop of the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Convenience Plus Quality: Joining Together To Grow The Business brought 14 key industry figures together to converge upon the crucial issue of how to continue to supply the portability and innovation that consumers now expect in their audio devices while also providing a high-resolution, high-quality sonic experience. The event, which took place before a select audience at the Venetian Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip, was moderated by Bob Ludwig (award-winning mastering engineer for artists including the Rolling Stones, Sheryl Crow, Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen). Ludwig led a wide-ranging discussion with panelists who work daily on the front lines touching upon key issues in both the business and technology of music and video. Panel members included GRAMMY-winning producers and engineers Michael Bishop and George Massenburg, as well as Best Buy's Gary Arnold; Universal Music Group's eLabs Paul Bishow; Ted Cohen EMI Music; Tom Dunn Panasonic; co-owner and president of Thiel Audio and former chairperson of the CEA Kathy Gornik; Microsoft-MSN Entertainment's Jon Kertzer; Surround Music Award-winning engineer Nathaniel Kunkel; Noel Lee, founder of Monster Cable/Monster Music; XM's Eric Logan; game music producer Tommy Tallarico; and Motorola's Dave Ulmer. "How we as an industry handle the reconciliation of quality and convenience will go far in determining the extent to which both the industry and consumers can benefit from advances in technology," observed Maureen Droney, Executive Director of the P&E Wing. "This panel was an unprecedented collection of talent from all over the music production spectrum, with producers and engineers alongside representatives of the record industry, the gaming industry and other sectors." observed Bob Ludwig, President of Gateway Mastering and Co-Chairman of the P&E Wing. "I personally cannot recall another panel with such a wide range of experience and perspective. Everyone learned a lot, with each discipline learning from the others. The P&E Wing of The Recording Academy has really helped broaden the exchange of views on a complex topic.: For more information, please visit www.grammy.com/pe_wing |

Epic recording artists Eighteen Visions chose Ocean
Way Recording to begin their highly anticipated follow-up to 2004's Obsession,
the record Metal Hammer called "The Album of the Year." The
band, who are among a select group praised by Revolver magazine as "The
Future of American Metal," have tapped Machine (Lamb of God, Every
Time I Die) to produce. The yet-to-be-titled album is tentatively
scheduled for a summer 2006 release. After forming in '95, Eighteen Visions
rose up through Orange County's fertile hard music scene with a sound
and style all their own. Though rooted in metal, the band refused to be
limited by the genre's narrow confines and went on to develop a diehard
international following on the strength of three explosive albums (Until
The Ink Runs Out, Lifeless, Vanity) and a frenetic live show. For information

When most people think of recording studios, their thoughts usually
settle on traditional music industry hubs such as New York, Los Angeles
or Nashville. But, musician and sound engineer John Parks is hoping to
change all that with the official opening of Saint Claire Recording, an
8,000 square foot recording/retreat complex situated on 14 acres of pastoral,
Lexington, KY countryside. Features rarely found in other studios include four well-appointed on-site guest rooms, recreational facilities, and a fully stocked kitchen with available catering, a spacious patio with hot tub, a conference room, as well as a cozy lounge area with a fireplace. All these amenities constitute an environment that is both creative and relaxed. We want musicians from all backgrounds to be inspired to work hard and play hard while at Saint Claire, John Parks says. As the founder and chairman of Citizens Commerce National Bank of Versailles and a prominent local businessman in central Kentucky, Will Parks refers to the studio as a Field of Dreams. Both he and son John hope to market Lexington, KY, as a trendy new destination for recording artists both successful and undiscovered. The perfect formula would be to book 60-70 percent of the year with major artists and the remainder would be comprised of local/regional talent, according to John Parks. Designed by renowned Canadian studio designers Pilchner-Schoustal, the center-piece of Saint Claires spacious control room is an 80 input SSL 9000J mixing console. All- digital recording is done via industry standard Pro Tools HD3 and RADAR systems. Rounding out the studios extensive equipment array are pieces from NEVE, Tube-Tech, Lexicon, API, and UREI. Equally impressive is the main tracking room which features 18 foot ceilings and 4 isolation booths. Saint Claires unique design and architecture has already earned it a nomination for a prestigious 2005 TEC Award for creative studio design. Saint Claire was one of five studios selected by a nominating panel of prominent professionals from all areas of the audio industry. The 2005 TEC Award winners will be announced this October at the 119th Audio Engineering Society Show in New York City. A huge fan of progressive rock artists such as King Crimson, Genesis, and Rush, studio owner John Parks studied engineering and live sound at the Full Sail multi-media school in Winter Park, FL and interned at Castle Music in Franklin, TN, prior to taking the reins of Saint Claire Recording. I wanted to build a facility here in Kentucky to compete with major studios all over the country, says John Parks. For more information on Saint Claire Recording, visit www.saint-claire.com. |

The award-winning film "Dark", which he
scored, is on video store shelves, with the soundtrack of the same name
hitting stores January 31st , his "It's Going Down" mixtape
and DVD series stays at the top of MTV.com's recommendations week after
week and now the upcoming MTV show "Yo Mama", hosted by "That
70's Show's" Wilmer Valderama and featuring a plethora of CHOPS'
music debuts on that network in late February; is there a medium he hasn't
yet conquered? The answer is, "No!" Having
produced music for industry heavyweights such as Fox, ESPN, Nike, Showtime,
Warner Bros. and Microsoft and collaborated with notables like Kanye West,
Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Chamillionaire, Bun B, The Game (he produced the
first single off of his new album/DVD) and Paul Wall, CHOPS feels like
he is only just beginning. "I live and breathe music,"
CHOPS grins. "No matter what I'm doing, my brain is composing."
With 500 plus mixtape appearances under his belt in 2005 alone, a film
score and accompanying soundtrack ("Dark"), and a slew of commercials,
all containing his music, in addition to MTV's "Yo Mama" - 20
episodes chock full of CHOPS' production - that isn't difficult to believe.
With upcoming projects with artists including Killa Kyleon (Boss Hogg
Outlaws), Mike Jones, Freeway, Ras Kass and others, and his film-inspired
album "Dark" www.darkthealbum.com
getting ready to hit stores at months end, CHOPS won't be resting any

Pete Townshend's musings in his online diary have
sparked warnings in the British press about the danger posed to iPod users
by excessive headphone levels. Pondering the Who's forthcoming album and
tour, the 60-year-old guitarist reveals that he believes his hearing loss
was due to the use of studio headphones, not just years of extreme stage
volumes. Townshend, writing about the problems he is having with the new
album because of his hearing loss, wrote, "Today,
this very morning, after a night in the studio trying to crack a difficult
song demo, I wake up realizing again--reminding myself, and feeling the
need to remind the world--that my own particular kind of damage was caused
by using earphones in the recording studio, not playing loud on stage."
Townsend must rest his hearing for 36 hours between sessions. He warned
iPod users, "My intuition tells me there is terrible trouble ahead."
The downside to downloading and the everyday reliance on computers, he
notes, is that "we use earphones at almost every stage of interaction
with sound." A report on the BBC News web site states that Britain's
Royal National Institute for the Deaf has found that 39 percent of 18
to 24-year-olds listened to personal music players for at least an hour
every day and 42 percent admitted they thought they had the volume too
high. The article notes that Phil Collins, Neil Young, Sting, Mick Fleetwood
and George Martin have all talked publicly about their hearing problems.
According to The Times of London, about 4.7 million Britons--one in ten
adults--are estimated to suffer from tinnitus. The report adds tinnitus-sufferer
Barbra Streisand and rapper Foxy Brown to the list of artists with hearing
impairment. Brown, who is 26, will shortly undergo surgery to restore
her hearing. For more information visit Pete Townshend online at www.petetownshend.co.uk |

IODA, the Independent Online Distribution Alliance, recently announced it has signed a deal with SoundExchange, the nonprofit performance rights organization that collects and distributes royalties for sound recordings played on webcasts, satellite radio and television, and digital cable television. IODA is the first digital music distributor to offer the integration of this service, allowing its roster of more than 1,000 independent rightsholders the option to manage and collect all their digital revenue in one place. Royalty collection and distribution via IODA is expected to begin in early 2006. Under the terms of this arrangement, IODA will provide all necessary data to SoundExchange for the labels that opt to collect the copyright holder portion of the digital performance royalty through IODA. In addition to collecting future royalties, IODA will also administer distributions of past royalties on behalf of the labels that opt in to the service. IODA-distributed labels will be able to track royalties collected from SoundExchange alongside the rest of their digital royalty earnings via the Rightsholder Dashboard, IODAs web-based business management tool that enables labels to review licensing deals, manage catalog and account information, access sales and royalty reports, and approve and authorize digital distribution of their catalog. All artists, labels and/or their representatives are invited to visit www.soundexchange.com |

File-sharing levels hit record levels in December, according to figures provided by DCIA industry data resource BigChampagne. The data, obtained by Digital Music News, shows an average simultaneous user level of 6.98 million during the holiday month. That beats a previous high of 6.87 million, recorded in July, and easily doubles a figure of 2.89 million from September 2003, when file-sharing lawsuits first began. The December levels also represent 26.9 percent jump over figures from the same month in 2004. Globally, gains were also substantial, moving to 9.55 million average simultaneous users, up 26.0 percent over the previous year. Average simultaneous user levels offer a more accurate barometer of P2P file-sharing levels than metrics like total files, which can be clouded by spoofed or bogus downloads. The file-sharing jumps are happening alongside breakneck increases in paid downloads. In the U.S., the final two weeks of 2005 were record-setting ones for the industry, driven by Christmas iPods and download store gift cards. Final week song purchases reached 20 million, which raised the annual paid download mark to 352 million. That comfortably doubles figures from 2004, though paid totals are easily dwarfed by illegal file-sharing volume. Whether paid downloads will ever rival file-sharing levels is speculative at this point, though proponents of the paid space point to a coming shake-up involving large P2P applications like eDonkey and LimeWire. |
