Alex Oana Wins Second MN Producer of the Year Award Acclaimed Minneapolis based producer/engineer Alex Oana (pronounced Oh-wanna), has been named Producer of the Year in Minnesota for the second year in a row, by the Minnesota Music Academy, a group made up of local musicians, club owners, music critics and music fans. Alex shared the ballot once again with past winner John Fields (Evan and Jaron, Andrew W.K., Mandy Moore). Some Oana's recent work includes the recently recently released Alic Peacock record (Aware/Columbia) that Alex engineered. The record includes guest appearances by Jon Brion, The Indigo Girls, and John Mayer. Alex also mixed one half of the record and Bob Clearmountain mixed half. When asked about his work on the record, Oana commented, "This was a really fun project. I'm excited to have my name in the credits again with Bob, who I met in 1997 while working on Semisonic's "Feeling Strangely Fine" here in MN." Meanwhile, Arista Records is sending out the Alex Oana produced Spymob single "Sitting Around Keeping Score" to radio stations on translucent, lime green vinyl. Neptunes/N.E.R.D. mastermind Pharrell Williams came up with the idea in order to promote Spymob's debut release on his Arista imprint Star Track. The Spymob record is scheduled to be released Spring 2003. Along with working in the big rooms in Minneapolis, Oana has his own cozy Pro Tools room in Minneapolis called citycabin, formerly known as Blackberry Way (Replacements). Alex is also having fun playing minisynth bass in his band Vicious Vicious who are known for their "Super-Happy-Number-One-Fun-Time" music. Among his many hits was the Derek and the Dominos' classic "Layla," featuring the duelling guitars of Clapton and the late Duane Allman. Tom Dowd started his music career in 1948 at New York's Ampex Studio where he became acquainted with Ahmet Ertegun, co-founder of Atlantic Records, who invited Dowd, then still a teenager, to join the label. His relationship with Clapton was one of his most enduring, lasting from the British guitarist's days with Cream through Derek and the Dominos and his later solo successes. Clapton called Dowd "the ideal recording man" in a 1996 interview. Clapton, who referred to Mr. Dowd as a father figure, has written that it was only through their relationship that he began to learn who he was and what his skills were as a musician. In the February 2002, issue of Grammy Magazine, he wrote: "There is a tribe of musicians, spread all over the world, who have been fostered and nurtured by Tom Dowd. We know who we are, and we are proud of who we are, but most of all, we are proud of him. I am honored and privileged to be one of them." Mr. Dowd worked at Atlantic records for more than 20 years before becoming a sought-after independent producer in the mid-1960s. The roster of artists he recorded with included Charles Mingus and jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, with whom he engineered "Giant Steps" and "My Favorite Things." Dowd worked with soul/r&b diva Aretha Franklin on her hit "Respect" and also recorded other black artists such as Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles, Otis Redding and James Brown in Florida and Memphis for Atlantic. Mr. Dowd also produced the Allman Brothers Band in the southern rockers' heyday. Their "Live at Fillmore East" was probably the recording he liked most that he had worked on, he told Reuters in 2000. Dowd, who worked out of the famed Criteria Studios in Miami for many years, also recorded Neil Young, Rod Stewart and Lynyrd Skynyrd, including the band's classic anthem "Freebird". He was considered a pioneer in the studio and is credited with introducing the first eight-track recording machine into a major studio in 1957. He also engineered the first stereo album, by the Wilbur De Paris Dixieland Band, which required customized equipment, including two needles, to play it. In later years, he lamented what he thought was the sorry state of the modern pop music industry he saw as lacking in real talent and overly driven by commercial interests. He was recently honoured with a National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Lifetime Achievement Award. ^BACK UP^ Little Labs Introduces The New Red Eye Recording Tool Continuing in the tradition of creating unique tools for the pro audio engineer, Hollywood, CA's Little Labs introduces the Red Eye Recording Tool. The Red Eye is a passive re-amp box/direct box with unique expansion capabilities. The high quality passive direct box in the Red Eye features phase reverse and earth lift. At the push of a button the Red Eye converts from a direct box into a re-amp box with its own input and output connectors. The re-amp in the Red Eye features earth lift, phase reverse, and level control. Daisy-chaining multiple rack-mountable Red Eyes (4 units fit a 1U space), with the supplied expansion in and out rear jacks and front panel expansion button, opens up the further creative potential of the Red Eye. Multiple guitar level impedance outputs can be created from a single balanced line level source, allowing you to correctly interface multiple vintage effect pedals or re-amp to multiple guitar amps. When used with any active direct box, whether it be a Little Labs Multi Z DI or other brands such as Avalon, Demeter or Evil Twin, the Red Eye creates a superb quality guitar level/impedance multiple output guitar splitter with as many outputs as Red Eyes in the rack. The Red Eye also can be used as an expansion box, creating extra transformer-isolated guitar level / impedance outputs for the popular Little Labs PCP Instrument Distro. The heart of the Red Eye is a Little Labs custom wound transformer. This transformer was chosen for its sonic characteristics and is made with the same core material and winding technique as the legendary UTC transformers found in many classic pro audio devices. The Little Labs Red Eye Recording Tool will work overtime for the creative audio engineer in every stage of production. Originally established in 1988, Little Labs was founded by Jonathan Little and has grown to be a leading independent manufacturer and distributor of pro-audio devices for the professional audio industry. Back in 2001 they released their own critically acclaimed self-produced debut album "Le plan" (Militant Muzik) along with three music videos, with solid featurings by well-known Rainmen, SP and Marseille's own heavyweight Faf Larage. Recognition soon followed: winners of the MIMI 2002 for Montreal's best hip hop/urban artist as well as a nomination for Ray Ray & Stratège as best producers, nominations at the Canadian Independent Music Awards 2002 in Toronto for best Francophone album and at Quebec's GALA de l'ADISQ 2002 for hip hop album of the year. Their reputation has since been growing by leaps and bounds - including a performance at Francofolies 2002 (seen on bandeapart.fm), opening for Canada's grammy-winner Nelly Furtado and Vancouver's Swollen Members (Metropolis), De La Soul and Toronto's Choclair (Aria) and Nelly & the St.Lunatics with Slum Village and the Rascalz (Molson Centre). They were chosen by the BBC to represent Montreal's French hip hop scene for its World Clubbing series, set in many international cities, and later invited by EMI, along with Muzion, to do the "French remix" of "Heaven Only Knows" by Toronto poet/rapper K-OS. They are guests on the new album by Quebec City's popular 83 crew on the Ray Ray-produced posse track "8-3-1-3". Ray Ray is also busy producing Montreal's young English MC Bless' debut album featuring such established artists as New York's Guru (GangStarr), Mister Cheeks (Lost Boyz) and b-boy Mister Wiggles (original member of the Rock Steady Crew). "Montreal French hip hop starts here, like Guru and Primo taken that one extra step, Ray Ray and Stratège have not only produced beats for everyone else, but they save the best shit for themselves. Le plan, a well-orchestrated blueprint for success…" says Scott C. of The Mirror. This free enhanced audio CD can be played in a standard CD player or as a CD-ROM and includes 89 dynamic tracks. AKG Acoustics U.S Marketing Manager, Sarita Stewart, states "Most microphone purchases are made without the benefit of a real demonstration. The main goal of this enhanced audio CD is to provide the reference points that are needed for the consumer to make a more informed and, ultimately, better purchasing decision. Listeners can hear for themselves the uncolored difference between microphones on many different instruments. Mic Check doesn't replace listening comparisons in a studio, but it is AKG's best attempt to bring the end user one step closer to that ideal." Mic Check is intended for distribution to serious musicians, studio owners, home recording enthusiasts, and is available directly from AKG and at the company's website, www.akgusa.com. The enhanced audio CD had been in the works for over nine months. Recording took place during three sessions at Masterlink Studios, Nashville, and in Chicago at both Pipertoonz and Perfect Sound Studios. In each case, multiple microphones were used to record professional musicians playing various instruments. Listening to each track in relation to one another will give the listener a chance to make an informed decision on the sound qualities of each microphone. When Mic Check is played as a CD-ROM in computers, it will provide not only audio tracks but also commentary from the producers and engineers, as well as details on the AKG products used on each track. "We recognize that there are many variables when recording and that each instrument, musician, room and placement is unique," explains Stewart. "We've made no creative or technical decisions on the end users behalf. On some instruments, the end user may prefer a lower priced microphone to a studio standard, or a 1/2" condenser to a 1" large diaphragm. The idea is to give the listener a chance to make their own decision based on their own needs and based on what they are hearing." AKG Acoustics, U.S. is located at 914 Airpark Center Drive, Nashville, TN 37217. The telephone number is 615-620-3800. The lawsuit also charges hip hop mega producer Dr. Dre, with practicing a form of "cultural imperialism" by not crediting Third World artists. Lahiri recently filed suit in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles seeking a halt to the further sale of the album "Truthfully Speaking" on Aftermath Records. Aside from Dre, the defendants named in the lawsuit include Interscope Records and parent company Universal Music. Lahiri claims that the producers of "Addictive" lifted four minutes of the original recording by Indian artist Lata Mangeshkar of the song "Thoda Resham Lagta Hai." "They literally superimposed their own drum track and lyrics over the beat," said Lahiri's lawyer Anthony Kornarens. "It's not just a small loop." "It's our opinion that the label simply took it for granted that Hindi music was something they didn't need pay for, that it could be used simply at will," Kornarens said. Truth Hurts' album has sold about 600,000 copies since it was released in June. "Addictive" was released as a single and became a top 10 hit. Saregama India Ltd., the Bombay-based film and music company that produced the original recording of Lahiri's song, filed its own suit last month in federal court in Houston, seeking $500 million in damages. Howard King, Dr. Dre's attorney, said his client had little to do with the production of "Truthfully Speaking." "There's no reason for him to be a defendant in this lawsuit, except that somebody's taking advantage of his name," King said. "He didn't write or perform on the record. It happens to have been released on a label he's part owner of." Truth Hurts, whose real name is Shari Watson, recently told MTV that Dre had remixed "Addictive," according to an article on the MTV Web site. "He really took it to another level," she said. "He took another part of the Indian sample and added it to the beginning and to the middle." The producer of the song is listed on "Truthfully Speaking" as DJ Quik, whose real name is David Blake. He told MTV that he had stumbled upon the Indian recording while channel surfing. "I woke up one morning -- I turned on the TV and landed on the Hindi channel," he said. Finding himself "grooving" to the beat of Lahiri's song, DJ Quik said, he was impressed by the music. "So I pushed record on the VCR," he said. ^BACK UP^ United Airlines Offers In-Flight 5.1 Surround Sound Audio Silverline Records and Dolby Laboratories have teamed up this holiday season with United Airlines to offer travelers a stunning multichannel music experience on all overseas 777 flights during the months of November and December. Utilizing the airline's in-flight entertainment system, passengers will be able to listen to a selection of Silverline Records' DVD-Audio repertoire enhanced by Dolby Headphone technology. Dolby Headphone processing enables standard stereo headphones to realistically portray the surround sound experience of a five-speaker audio system, as employed in home theater systems. Silverline Records, a division of the 5.1 Entertainment Group, is providing music from several of their high-resolution DVD-Audio surround titles for playback on United Airlines using Dolby Headphone technology. John Trickett, chairman of 5.1 Entertainment Group (the parent of Silverline), said, "I first heard music on Dolby headphone about three years ago, when it was in its early stages of development. I was instantly convinced. I am excited that we are able to bring the same experience to the customers of United Airlines." "Dolby Headphone for In-Flight Entertainment has greatly enhanced the entertainment experience for airline passengers watching films on board. Now it will introduce United Airlines customers to a multichannel music experience from DVD-Audio, bringing enjoyment of music while flying to a whole new level," says John Kellogg, general manager, multichannel audio and music production for Dolby Laboratories. Dolby Headphone's unique effect is achieved via a powerful advanced algorithm that processes multichannel as well as two-channel content to create a dramatic surround sound listening experience from a standard pair of headphones. Dolby Headphone technology can be incorporated into DVD-Video and DVD-Audio players, set-top cable boxes, satellite receivers, digital televisions, VCRs, personal computers, video game consoles, A/V surround decoders, auto sound systems, multimedia speaker systems, and wireless headphones. An additional advantage of Dolby Headphone is the absence of "listener fatigue" that often accompanies other listening experiences. ^BACK U P^ A Few Quick Los Angeles Producer Management Updates SANTANA's new album, "Shaman," debuted at #1 and features "Sideways" featuring CITIZEN COPE, Mixed by DAVID BIANCO and "Why Don't You And I" featuring CHAD KROEGER of NICKELBACK, mixed by DAVID THOENER.
