Greg Spotts Entertainment Evolves Into Design Network Known for a boutique roster of alternative-oriented producers including Lou Giordano, Nick Sansano, and John Keane, Greg Spotts Entertainment has been branching out into the representation of visual talent. What began as an experiment has grown into the GSE Design Network, a decentralized group of graphic designers and webdesigners who have created websites for the films Lord of the Rings, Rush Hour 2, Blade 2, Time Machine and The Cell, and recording artists including India Arie, Disturbed, The Dream, Nelly Furtado, St-Lunatics and Godsmack. The GSE Design Network is evolving into an alternative to the traditional advertising agency. Rather than placing a large number of creative people under one roof, GSE is linking together young entrepreneurial designers across North America, allowing joint participation in projects without the homogenizing effects of a corporate structure. Current advertising clients include the Los Angeles Galaxy Major League Soccer team, who have hired GSE to produce their advertising and marketing campaign for the 2002 season. GSE recently applied its marketing expertise to the creation of the Shortlist Music Awards, which took place on November 19th, 2001 in Los Angeles. Co-founded by Greg Spotts and A&R executive Tom Sarig, the Shortlist asked a panel of judges including Beck, Mos Def, Macy Gray, Aimee Mann and Michael Penn to select the ten most creative records that had not yet gone gold. The winner, Sigur Ros, received a $10,000 cash prize provided by 2001 sponsor Virgin Megastore. Please visit www.gregspottsentertainment.com and www.shortlistofmusic.com for more information. ^BACK UP^

International "Boy Scouts Of The Blues" Initiative For Kids Filmmaker John Landis is slated to direct segments of an all-star television show that will pay tribute to the Blues as the foundation of American music, and launch an international Blues education initiative for kids similar to the Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts. Among the growing list of artists involved in the effort are Ray Charles, Brian May of Queen, Slash of Guns n' Roses, Sinbad, Bonnie Raitt, Chuck D of Public Enemy, Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of The Doors, and producer Glen Ballard. Said Slash at the Blues Lab's recent Soldier of Blues Awards honoring Ray Charles: "It's really important that younger cats learn to appreciate the foundation of where modern music comes from. That's why the Blues Lab, providing free instruments and after school jam sessions for these kids, is so great - I wish I had been brought into a circle like this when I was younger." Music from the show will also be recorded to create a 12-song musical curriculum album by which kids and adults around the world can teach themselves, and others, to play the Blues. In addition, the show's "house band" will consist of high school Blues Lab students from Compton, Watts and South Central LA, whose credits include appearances alongside Quincy Jones, John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson at Ray Charles's 70th Birthday Celebration, and opening for Robert Cray. "World class producers like Glen Ballard are signing on to help arrange exciting Blues tracks with modern artists, legends, and these hyper-talented Blues Lab kids," says Blues Lab founder Sir Charles. "The 12 songs performed for the show will pay tribute to one of America's most profound innovations, and inspire younger generations to see learning the Blues as a simple stepping stone to being able to play all the music they love, from Rn'B to Rock to Hip Hop." Funds raised by sales of the curriculum album will provide musical instruments and venues nationally, in a reward based after-school program similar to the Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts, where youngsters of all ages, genders and creeds can gather to learn to play the 12 simple songs with qualified Blues mentors. Among the growing list of artists interested in the project are Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, Daniel Lanois, Dr. Dre, Tom Hanks, Van Morrison and India.Arie, and many more of today's music stars are in talks to join the salute to the American Blues tradition that inspired the likes of Elvis Presley, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles. "Everybody is very excited," says Blues Lab's Fundin. "Sinbad asked me, 'Is it too late for a 45-year-old comedian to realize his dream of learning to play Blues guitar?' I told him the great thing is that the Blues is accessible to anybody, from juvenile probation gangbangers in Compton to mop-tops in Liverpool. If everybody knew how to play the same 12 simple Blues songs, humans might not have the time to war and fight each other - we'd be too busy jamming!" G&E Rocks Out with their "Buzzcocks" Out for VH-1 Show G&E Music was contracted to compose original music for VH-1's new show "Nevermind The Buzzcocks". A fast paced music and pop culture quiz show, Buzzcocks features guest celebrities and comedian Mark Maron as host. The concept for the show originated in the UK where it became a huge hit. G&E Music wrote the opening theme, bumps and credit bed. G&E was called in on the project by VH-1 producer Gregg Babiuk. Babiuk directed G&E to create tracks that are modern, aggressive and unmistakably rock 'n roll. To fit the bill, G&E delivered five:30 that hit the mark. G&E creative partner Erik Blicker said "Having a client that brings us into the creative process with a clear vision really gets us amped up and that energy reflects in the music." Babiuk and his team chose a track that emulates the sound of a punk rock power trio. Chunky distorted guitar played through a Marshall half stack was used to get the appropriate sound for the piece while a fast driving drum track, complete with big fills and a low tom break down, sets the pace. Of course no power trio would be complete with out a punchy electric bass laying the foundation. Once the show theme had been completed, G&E then mixed and edited several bumps and loops using Pro Tools mix plus 24 and Peak for VH-1's producers to use during the show. The bumps for Nevermind The Buzzcocks are used in a manner unique to the game show format. A guitar riff or a drum break down will play while a contestant is racing against the clock, creating the right tension. In all, G&E Music delivered a full length 1:00 version of the theme, a show open, a :20 loopable bed, three :05 bumps, three :03 stings and three :01 stings. Nevermind The Buzzcocks premieres in March on VH-1 and will air several times a week. G&E, founded by Glenn Schloss and Erik Blicker is a full service sound design and audio post production company providing licensed and original music to the film and television industry. For more information about G&E, visit www.gemusic.com or contact Matt Kelly at matt@gemusic.com. ^BACK UP^
