The runaway indie success of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah may have taken the music industry by surprise, but any fan of American independent music who's taken the time to read the album's credits would not have been surprised at all to see producer/engineer Adam Lasus' name. Since the dawn of 'indie rock' in the early '90s, Lasus has been involved in the recording of over 100 albums, including those of such notable artists as Yo La Tengo, Juliana Hatfield, Helium, Clem Snide, Versus, The Lilys and Madder Rose. He got his start in Philadelphia, in a basement studio called "Studio Red" and then moved to an old firehouse in Brooklyn in Red Hook and renamed his outfit Fireproof Recording. Adam has just relocated to Los Angeles, with a new project studio already up and running. My new studio In Los Angeles is still called Fireproof and has been designed to be a fun and vibey place to record. It is a playground of sorts for musicians, with tons of instruments and effects pedals and vintage recording gear. My concept is that the studio needs to be a place where you can relax and have a good time and in that state creativity flows to tape with ease. Adam's recent move to Los Angeles was partly due to the demand ignited by his work on the CYHSY record. "I knew the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album was an important one while I was working on it, but I did not know it would become the groundbreaking self-release that's giving the industry a good kick in the pants," he says. "CYHSY's songs are a great blend of 1977-78 new wave hooks, 80s British post-punk and smart indie rock. When were getting ready to record some of the basic tracks they started playing Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth. They were playing it so kick-ass that I had to roll tape even before I had all my sounds completely tweaked because I didn't want the moment to slip away. And that was the take that made it to the album. It was about capturing a performance and a spark that usually only happens in the first couple takes. The early takes are always the most inspired. On the recording of the record, Adam commented, "The record began on 2-inch analog tape, and was then transferred to digital for ease of mixing. There was none of the copying and pasting that is very common in pop production these days. I try to record as old school as possible. Having been in the business for so long, Lasus has an informed industry perspective. I have always encouraged bands to put out their own records instead of waiting to be discovered and I think we will see a lot more of this kind of label-free success in the future," he says. "Watching this record take off and end up on tons of best of 2005 lists has been exciting and refreshing and will open the floodgates for more creative and adventurous albums to be made and played on the radio. Adam is represented by Jim Phelan and Jerimaya Grabher at GPS | Global Positioning Services in Santa Monica, CA. (310) 656 1340 or info@globalpositioningservices.net. |

The Talking Heads Brick (Rhino Entertainment), a DualDisc box set, garnered several awards at the 4th annual Surround Music Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, including "Best Mix: Non-Orchestral," "Best of Show," and "Best DualDisc Release." Producer Jerry Harrison and engineer Eric "ET" Thorngren spent close to a year completing the massive 90-plus track opus--all eight of the Talking Heads studio albums. Now, they are creating surround mixes for the DVD and film of Kenny Wayne Shepherd's Ten Days Out: Blues from the Backroads, set for release in September 2006. Harrison said, "We have been bitten by the majesty of surround sound and are interested in taking on other surround mixing projects. We've developed a core set of practices for surround mixing," continued Harrison. "When we started the Talking Heads surround mixes we spent a lot of time listening to what others had done, and created our set of preferences for the way a 5.1 mix should sound. Rock music has an appeal that comes from power not clarity." Thorngren added, "I feel there is a unique advantage to mixing with analog compressors. You get the fullness or ìmeatinessî that rock needs." Harrison continued, "We make sure to retain the power of the band, and keep it on a stage in front of you. We use more subtle techniques in the rear speakers, but you definitely feel immersed in the music; that's the joy of experiencing surround production." The first surround project Harrison and Thorngren completed was remixing the 1984 live Talking Heads Stop Making Sense for DVD release from Palm Pictures in 1999. Harrison and Thorngren will use all the tools and techniques from earlier projects to mix Kenny Wayne Shepherd's Ten Days Out: Blues from the Backroads. The team works out of Harrison's Sausalito Sound studio in Sausalito, CA, which is uniquely equipped for surround mixing using two Pro Tools HD systems and 48-channels of Dangerous 2-Bus and 2-Bus LT for analog summing of the 6 channel mixes. Mixes are recorded onto the second Pro Tools system at 192kHz or 96kHz depending on the project's needs. The studio also has two sets of surround speakers to check mixes, a Blue Sky SAT 6.5 and a special set of 5 Yamaha NS-10M speakers with vintage Hafler 220 amps and a carefully matched Meyer Sound subwoofer. Outboard gear includes a host of classic analog EQs, compressor/limiters, console pre-amp and EQ modules and more. |

Richard Boote, owner and managing director of Strongroom recording studios today announces his purchase of AIR Studios, the world class recording facilities established and chaired by legendary Beatles producer Sir George Martin, from Chrysalis Group PLC and Pioneer GB Limited. The multi-million pound purchase of the AIR Studios premises, a converted Victorian church in Hampstead, London, is backed by Lloyds TSB Corporate. Richard Boote, owner and managing director of Strongroom, says: I believe that bringing Strongroom and Air together will not only ensure the survival of two of the greatest recording facilities in Europe, but also enhance the offerings of both studios. Clients will benefit from an expanded and more varied pool of technological knowledge and experience, a wider choice of studios and access to a much broader range of state of the art audio and video post-production facilities. Richard plans to keep both businesses running as they exist today, maintaining their structures, identities and areas of specialisation. In the longer term clients of both studios - in industries ranging from music, film, broadcast and advertising to games and new media - will benefit from an even richer offering of music and post-production services at a broader range of price points. For example, AIRs post clients will have access to packages including Strongrooms Off-Line and On-Line HD video post facilities (enabling the group to offer a complete service of video post, audio post and sound track production) whilst Strongrooms clients will be able to use AIRs matchless Lyndhurst Hall studio for orchestral and large scale acoustic recordings. Established 21 years ago by Richard Boote, Strongroom supplies world class creative music and media services to international artists, record labels and the broadcast, film and DVD industries. Artists such as Feeder, The Prodigy, Sugababes, Goldfrapp, The Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, The Thrills and Razorlight have recently recorded and mixed at Strongroom. Recent post-production projects include The Snow Queen (BBC), Autopsy Life and Death (C4), Bounty Hunters (Bravo), Just add Moves (MTV) and commercials for Lynx, Nike, The Milk Development Council and Microsoft. www.strongroom.com |

Mark Knopfler, producer/engineer Chuck Ainlay, and mastering engineer Bob Ludwig took home the Grammy this year for "Best Surround Sound Album" for their 5.1 remix and master of the Dire Straits classic album, Brothers In Arms. The original stereo recording of Brothers in Arms was released in 1986 and was one of the first all digital recordings for the new compact disc format. On the technology used to complete Brothers In Arms-20th Anniversary Edition, Knopfler commented, "I still use and strongly believe in much of the older analog equipment for premium sound. However, there are many clear advantages in harnessing digital technology with analog equipment." Using original engineer Neil Dorfsman's tracks, Brothers In Arms was remixed to create the new edition last year on AMD Opteron processor-based digital audio workstations running Steinberg Nuendo production software at Knopfler's British Grove Studio in London. Ainlay has served as the engineer on several of Knopfler's solo projects as well as the more recent albums by Dire Straits. For Brothers In Arms--20th Anniversary Edition, remixed for both DVD-Audio and SACD formats, he started with Dorfsman's original master tapes, which were recorded on a Sony 332416-bit DASH machine, the first iteration of Sony digital multitrack that only supported 24 tracks. Mixing was done on a Neve 88R console, with tracks individually bused from Nuendo directly to the console. In addition, a five-channel surround effects mix in Nunedo was also brought into the console and an SSL compressor was put across the mix bus for overall compression. From there, Ainlay plied his talents to transform the tracks into a stunning surround presentation before handing them off to Ludwig for final mastering. Brothers In Arms--20th Anniversary Edition is available internationally through the Mercury Records label, while in the U.S. it's on the Warner Brothers label. |

Digital Rights Agency, the leading worldwide digital
music distributor, announced it has sent a letter to Sprint Nextel Corporation
CEO Gary Forsee, strongly condemning the company's failure to include
independent record label catalogs in its recently launched full-track
download service. Digital Rights Agency represents more than 250 leading
independent labels, including exclusive digital rights for the multi-platinum
Daddy Yankee title Barrio Fino, the Billboard #1 Latin album of 2005,
and key titles by gold and platinum recording artists Chamillionaire,
Lil Jon, Snoop Dogg, Death Cab for Cutie, Yellowcard, Smokey Robinson,
Count Basie and many others. "More than
three months after launching the service, and after advertising on the
Super Bowl and Grammy Awards, it's simply unacceptable that Sprint continues
to exclude independent labels from its full-track download service,"
said Digital Rights Agency Managing Director Tuhin Roy. "It's
difficult to understand how Sprint will compete with services like iTunes
or Verizon's Vstream, if 25% of the time, it will be unable to deliver
the music than its subscribers are looking for." For two years, DRA
has attempted to initiate direct negotiations with Sprint for a license,
and has been repeatedly told that Sprint does not have the resources to
carry independent labels. However, DRA and several large independent content
owners including the Beggars Group and V2 Records have licensed their
catalogs and delivered content to Groove Mobile, which back-ends the Sprint
service. As a result, the inclusion of thousand of independent label catalogs
in the Sprint service is currently as simple as Groove Mobile 'flipping
a switch.' However, Sprint has refused to take deliveries of independent
content from Groove Mobile or to negotiate direct licensing deals with
independent labels. In contrast, Verizon has been extremely supportive
of independent record labels and has included thousands of independent
label catalogs in its Vstream service. "Not only do independent labels
represent 25% of the music sold in the United States, but they are the
engine that keeps the industry vital and growing," added Roy. "DRA's
mission is to ensure that independent labels have fair access to digital
music services, and we sincerely hope that Sprint will reverse its current
policy of excluding the talented and popular artists represented by indie
labels." For more information visit www.digitalmediastrategygroup.com |

Producer/engineer Dave Hyman was recently in session at The Barber Shop Studios with dancehall star Elephant Man. Hyman booked the Barber Shop to provide a remix and additional production for Elephant Man's hit, "The Way We Roll," featuring Busta Rhymes and Shaggy. The remix was co-produced by Hyman and Cipha Sounds with A&R man Willie Daniels. Hyman created the remix on the Barber Shop's 72-channel SSL XL 9000 K Series console. "It was great," Hyman said of the session. "This was my second time working at the Barber Shop. The first time I went there, I fell in love with the place." As an alumnus of the defunct Hit Factory in New York City, Hyman is accustomed to high standards and The Barber Shop, he recalled, meets those standards. "I was used to having the best equipment and a really comfortable environment. The Barber Shop is always homey and welcoming-it's almost like going to a resort."
