Did you get yours? Did the RPM Direct Presents: Unsigned Volume 1 CD show up in your mailbox? Check it out if you haven't yet - we'd love to hear your feedback. If you didn't get one, click here to get your copy. But act fast because they're nearly all gone and you'll be sorry you missed out! As you read this edition of your most beloved biweekly (most of the time) Newsletter you may see us covering more studio news than in the past. The reason? We're priming you for the launch of our very long awaited Intl. Studio Directory - thousands of studios, searchable by city, price and even recording console. We see this directory as the perfect companion to the Producer/Engineer directory already in place. In the near future, RPM users will be able to research recording pros and facilities all in one place. It's shaping up to be very badass - you've been warned! Some of you have been writing in asking, "how come I haven't seen an RPM Direct Newsletter in my inbox lately?" We're sorry about that people - organizing the mass delivery of RPM CDs has all but consumed our available person power during the last couple weeks. But we're back on track starting now. Don't forget you can always visit our simple little archive to see what you may have missed. All press releases, industry news, music for review and other materials of interest should be sent to the attention of Jerimaya Grabher at the RPM Direct headquarters in (mostly) sunny Manhattan Beach, CA. |

L.A.'s
Record Plant Is Overflowing With A List Bookings
We recently checked in with Amy and Rose at Los Angeles' Record Plant Studios
and learned that they've been busier than ever. Here are some of the latest
highlights: A&M Pres/Producer Ron Fair occupied three
of Record Plant's studios with singer/songwriter Vanessa Carlton.
Mixing were Hugh Padgham on studio one's SSL 800 G+, Tal Herzberg on studio
two's SSL 4000 G+, and Mike Ross in studio 4 on the SSL 9000 J. Production
super duo the Neptunes (Chad Hugo and Pharrel Williams) resided in
studio 1, working with Grammy Winner Alicia Keys, Beyonce Knowles,
Solange and the hard-rocking KORN. Manning the controls on
the SSL 8000G+ was Brian Garten, assisted by Jay Goin and Yen-Hue Tan. Trading
the Nashville skyline for the L.A. oasis, Lee Ann Womack, with Producer
Matt Serletic and Engineer David Thoener, mixed her forthcoming
album, in studio 3 on the SSL 9000 J. Trading his boxing gloves for a black
suit, Will Smith entered studio 4 with engineer Rob Chiarelli
to mix the theme for his upcoming movie, Men In Black II, on the SSL
9000 J. The Goo Goo Dolls mixed their new single with producer Rob
Cavallo and engineer Ed Cherney in studio 3 on the 9000 J. Producer
Shep Crawford worked with O-Town in studio 2 on some material
for their upcoming release. The sessions were caught on camera for the Making
the Band series on MTV. Producer/songwriter duo Tim and Bob (aka Funktwons)
spent time in studio 2 with singer Willa Ford, working on tracks
for her upcoming Atlantic Records release. The fun-loving, hard rocking
Limp Bizkit made studio 4, its SSL 9000 J and magnificent tracking
room their home for a few weeks, while they worked on pre-production for
their upcoming Interscope Record release. Making sure the audio rocked as
hard as the Bizkit crew, was the responsibility of rock-solid engineer,
Terry Date, assisted by Anthony Kilhoffer. New Warner Bros. Records
artist Drycell was in studio 4 with legendary engineer Alan Moulder
on the SSL 9000 J, with Jeff Blue producing. Warner Records act
Glassjaw spent time in studio 2 with engineering great Mike Frasier
and producer Ross Robinson, making the faders fly on the SSL 4000G+.

And The Grammy Award Goes To... With an ongoing 18-year relationship with SSL involving 24 consoles, the Hit Factory has successfully recorded the royalty of Rock, Pop, R&B and Hip-Hop music. The XL is a 'J' Series console on steroids, and that's exactly what we wanted for these two rooms,” says Troy Germano, CEO of the Hit Factory. "The XL has the power and flexibility to go back and forth between regular stereo mixing and 5.1 for DVD audio and SACD. We feel that these multi-format options are what we need to continue growing within our industry, especially since they are being set up with 5.1, just like we did in our Miami rooms."The Hit Factory’s XL 9000 Ks are identical 80-channel consoles with the focus of the larger Studio 6 on tracking and mixing, while Studio 7 addresses mixing and overdubbing. "One of the reasons we purchased two consoles was to allow clients to go back and forth between the two rooms," Germano explains. "This necessitated making both control rooms identical to accommodate our clients. In addition, we're also excited about the remote mic-pre option, which will be installed in Studio 6. We expect to be online with both rooms towards the end of April and anticipate strong bookings from the beginning." The new XL 9000 K console appealed to the Hit Factory because of features such as the optimized signal path to address the needs of higher sample rate recordings. They were also impressed with the new automation computer’s reputed speed and power, offering an on-line mix and compare function and SSL’s Advanced Photo Realistic Total Recall. This, combined with comprehensive surround sound mixing controls throughout the console architecture, helped to close the deal. But SSL as a company was the prime factor in finalizing the decision. "We have always seen SSL as an excellent advanced-technology company," states Germano. "The main reason we made this decision was because of the service, support and the great relationship we have with the people at SSL. The way they treat their clients makes it very easy to make a purchase of such large magnitude. We are confident the XL will keep us on the forefront of the business and allow us to address the new surround delivery formats for our clients." For more information contact Troy Germano, Manager Hit Factory at (212) 664-1000. ^BACK UP^ Checking In With Moir/Marie Ent's Bennett Kaufman We recently checked with with Moir/Marie Entertainment producer manager Bennett Kaufman about his clients have been up to in the studio: NEAL AVRON - Just finished producing the 2nd LP for NEW FOUND GLORY on MCA.
