| Are you ready for an end to the endless complaining and meaningless speculation about "what's wrong with the music business?" From layoffs to file sharing and piracy to ISP crack downs and executive lawsuits, the headlines these days are full of doomsday predictions, negative press and, frankly, lots of whining. Here's a concept - instead of bemoaning the state of business, how about a shift in collective consciousness to a mindset that is focused on building bridges, networking, support and taking charge of charting the course of our own future? It sure beats complaining and while everyone else is waiting around to see what happens next, we might even get some work done. Tony
Visconti To Remix T.
Rex's Seminal 'Electric Warrior' In 5.1
World renowned and universally regarded music producer Tony Visconti is remixing his original production of T. Rex's seminal release Electric Warrior, in 5.1 surround sound at The Looking Glass Studios in New York City for a late 2003 release. In the sounds of Electric Warrior, Visconti helped give birth to Glam Rock, and this 5.1 surround sound edition will mark one of the first times that an original producer has been able to return to the studio to re-mix the album in surround sound. "We knew we were creating something special when we laid down the tracks for Electric Warrior," said Visconti. "Now, with surround sound, listeners will be able to hear exactly what I heard as I sat in the studio with Marc (Bolan) and the band. This was one of the most important albums of my career, and I'm honored to have been invited to recapture those amazing sessions again." Electric Warrior stayed on the Billboard charts for 34 weeks, but its prescient sound reverberates through rock music to this day. As James Hunter wrote in Rolling Stone, "Before 1971's Electric Warrior, T. Rex -- the brainchild of late English singer-songwriter-guitarist Marc Bolan -- had been an acoustic and folky affair, complete with albums that had titles such as Unicorn and Prophets Seers and Sages. But with Warrior, Bolan, percussionist Mickey Finn and producer Tony Visconti created an altogether different beast -- something that sounded like Fifties rock & roll in the hands of a girl-crazy hippie vampire-boy, and would eventually be called glam rock." Stephen Thomas Erlewine of The All Music Guide to Rock (1995) wrote, "Electric Warrior has nothing but teenage kicks; it's glam rock at its absolute best. Without question, the definitive, classic T. Rex." Visconti has also been busy with another one of rock's icons. He produced David Bowie's 2002 release Heathen (Iso/Columbia), and, with its infectious rhythms, insightful lyrics and immaculate covers, all add up to one of Bowie's best albums since the platinum release Scary Monsters. Additionally, Visconti has completed the 5.1 surround sound remix of two Bowie releases, Heathen and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars: 30th Anniversary Edition. Tony Visconti's legacy includes various other productions with David Bowie and T. Rex as well as projects for U2, The Moody Blues, Luscious Jackson, D Generation, Sparks, The Move, Ziggy Marley, Dandy Warhols, Thin Lizzy, The Alarm, The Strawbs, Procol Harum, Mercury Rev, The Stranglers, Squeeze, John Hiatt, The Seahorses, Rick Wakeman, and The Boomtown Rats. "This is the biggest move we'd made since we originally formed Waxploitation", says the company's President, Jeff Antebi. Masson, who also just completed 5.1 mixes for Marilyn Manson, brags, "Nancy's absolutely fantastic. Music is a human interaction both emotionally and personally and those are just a few of the many elements she brings. I come here because of her, she's got a great vibe and she's a talented mastering engineer." Adding to the excitement at Moonlight was the presence of producer Paul Rogers who has been following the Cribb and Masson, making them the focus of a new pilot for VH1. The VH1 show details private residences that have been converted into recording environments. When Rogers heard the band and Masson was mastering in a facility, which had been a private resident converted into a professional mastering studio, they couldn't miss the opportunity to turn the cameras on Matter. Although Masson initially tracked the Cribb on a 24-track Studer A820 he transferred everything over to Pro Tools HD 24-bit/96k and brought the final mixes to Matter on a hard drive. "I used the Alesis Masterlink 24/96 hard disk to master the Cribb," explains Matter. "We then ran everything through the Lucid SRC9624 and the Lucid Converters into the Sonic HD. I also relied heavily on the Massenburg Design Works EQ; it's so transparent in sonic quality that I can notch the tightest of frequencies to get the maximum depth out of whatever part of the program I'm applying it to. For instance, I achieved (thanks to Rogers great mixes) even more definition between the kick drum and bass guitar and was able to fine-tune the toms within the whole sonic picture." Matter also utilized the TC 6000 as well as Manley's Massive Passive and Variable MU, which gave an enhanced analog feel to the whole record. Matter concludes, "All of this produced an amazing listening experience with great songs. It was an honor to work with such an amazing group of talented people." Originally established in 1998 by mastering engineer and owner Nancy Matter, Moonlight Mastering has grown to be a leader in the field of Digital Audio Mastering providing sequencing, compilations, editing and mastering services in stereo and 5.1 formats for the professional audio industry.
