Nashville's Treasure Isle Recorders Celebrates 23rd Anniversary
When former Beach Boys manager Fred Vail arrived in Nashville nearly 30 years ago, the city was nothing like it is today. "I think the tallest building in town was 14 stories; hit albums were doing about 80,000 to 100,000 units; album budgets were $25,000 and there were only five labels here," said Vail from his Treasure Isle Recorders, Inc. office in Nashville. After spending the first six years in artist promotion and marketing --essentially the same work he had done as a promotion executive with Capitol and RCA Records -- Vail, along with two partners, purchased the former Richie House Studio on "Music Row" in 1980. When their new venture, Island Recorders, lost it's lease a year later, Vail moved to the Berry Hill/100 Oaks area, just ten minutes southeast of "Music Row." Reemerging as Treasure Isle Recorders, Inc. in September 1982, the studio celebrates it's twenty-third Anniversary this summer. Treasure Isle is the second oldest independent studio in Nashville under the same management as well as the first studio to design an LEDE type room (1982), and the first multitrack digital studio in Nashville (1983). The studio has long been considered one of the top recording facilities in "Music City, USA." George Massenberg has said of the studio: "Treasure Isle is simply the best 'live' tracking room in Nashville." Vail still operates the studio. He purchased his two former partner's shares in November/December 2000, and, along with engineer/musician Michael Hopkins, opened a second room, "The Cove at Treasure Isle," earlier this year. "I was away from Treasure Isle for nearly five years -- 1995 to 2000," said Vail, "and when I returned, it was a totally different studio scene here. ProTools and Radar dominated the city, producer and artist owned studios were taking business away from the older more established rooms, and 'home studios' were eating away at our demo trade. Plus, country music sales -- always our city's mainstay -- were off by 30% or more." "We had to make some adjustments. It meant bringing in four new partners and now, nearly three years later, we're 'back in the hunt," said Vail. Being 'back in the hunt' meant undergoing the most extensive 'make over' in the studio's 23 year history. It meant meeting with legendary British designer John Oram and custom designing a new Trident 80 5.1 console -- the first in the United States -- and Treasure Isle's fourth Trident desk. It features 24 tracks of the legendary Series 80 modules and 24 of the ProOram modules. Vail also added ProTools, iz Radar24, several racks of new and vintage outboard gear, a new array of microphones, and a new Yamaha C-7 Grand piano. He also completely updated the decor and creature comforts of the studio. "We had two choices," said Vail, "either tread water and do nothing, while we watched studio rates plummet, or step up to the plate and go for the 'home run.' We chose the latter." His gamble has paid off. Coming off the studio's best 'back to back' months in the history of the room, Treasure Isle enters the summer of 2003 with increased optimism for the Nashville marketplace. For more information contact Fred Vail, Pres./CEO Treasure Isle Recorders, Inc. Nashville, TN (615) 297-0700. ^BACK UP^

Eventide Introduces Clockworks Legacy Plug-in Demo
With the Eventide Clockworks Legacy plug-ins currently shipping, Eventide recently announced the availability of fully functional, time-limited demos, downloadable from www.eventide.com. The demo includes the H910, Omnipressor, Instant Phaser, Instant Flanger, and H949 plug-ins for Digidesign Pro Tools TDM systems. During the seven-day trial demonstration period, users will enjoy unrestricted use of all five plug-ins, until the demo period is completed. Further use will require purchase of the software, which is available through authorized Eventide dealers worldwide. Only one seven-day trial period will be granted per computer system. "By offering this demonstration software, we are allowing potential customers in this market full access to all five plug-ins on a seven-day trial basis," said Ray Maxwell, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Eventide. "This is the best way to evaluate these great effects, with your own tracks." The Eventide Plug-In Demonstration Software is available here and includes the following plug-ins: The Omnipressor, modeled after the legendary analog hardware processor, introduced by Eventide in 1971 and available through 1984, is an analog compressor with an attitude. Queen's Brian May was a very early customer and the Omnipressor quickly became a part of his signature guitar sound. The H910, Eventide's first Harmonizer brand effects processor, and the world's first pitch changer, was introduced in 1975 and sold through 1984. Tony Visconti was among the early devotees, using it to create the unique snare sound on David Bowie's "Young Americans," "Low," and "Lodger." The Instant Flanger, an analog flanger, was first released in 1976 and sold though 1984. The original was one of the first hardware products to recreate the effect of tape "flanging" electronically and was widely used on hit records throughout the last three decades. The H949 was the first "deglitched" pitch changer. Introduced in 1977 and sold through 1984, the H949 was the only piece of digital gear Jimmy Page allowed in his guitar rig, and was also used by Frank Zappa in his guitar rig. The Eventide Clockworks Legacy series of plug-ins offer full parameter automation, MIDI control, and control surface integration to take advantage of the complete Pro Tools feature set. Headquartered in Little Ferry, NJ, Eventide created the very first Harmonizer brand effects processors in 1975. Visit Eventide on the Web for more information at www.eventide.com. ^BACK UP^

Canada's Richard Chycki Turns Out Hot Mixes For Top Acts
Canadian rock heroes Our Lady Peace are continuing to tour around the world in support of their latest Bob Rock-produced effort titled 'Gravity', which is quickly approaching platinum in America. After mixing a live CD of recordings done during the Canadian leg of the tour, Richard Chycki has been mixing a surround 5.1 DVD of the same tour and an exclusive HDTV broadcast to be aired sometime soon. The first single is due to hit radio any time, with a hot live version of 'Starseed' in America and a song titled 'Not Enough' in Canada. Lava Records' Simple Plan is poised to be one of the punk-pop sensations of this summer with their latest single 'Addicted'. Chycki recently mixed a movie soundtrack piece for the band for the film feature 'The Real Cancun'. Richard has also completed mixes for a DVD in 5.1 surround of the band's live antics in Cancun. Producer Iestyn Polson (David Gray) has been tracking and mixing EMI's David Usher (Moist) with Richard at the helm. The work is being done at Metalworks Studios in Toronto, Canada in the Neve and SSL 9080J rooms, respectively. A few additional mix items: Richard is mixing Hawksley Workman's new CD for Universal/Island after finishing a mix for the band 'Jersey', the first single for EMI's new signing called 'Generation Genocide'. He is also mixing a track for EMI artist Tom Cochrane; Tom is contributing a track to the 'Light of Day' project - a double CD Bruce Springsteen tribute featuring profile performers and songwriters like Elvis Costello, Billy Bragg and E Street's own Nils Lofgren. All proceeds are going to The Parkinson's Disease Foundation. Finally, be sure to check out the June issue of Professional Sound magazine. Richard Chycki is the cover story, with a particular focus on his mix work in 5.1 surround. For more info contact Richard Chycki on (818) 332 4138 ^BACK UP^
Checking In With Studio City Sound For Some Summer News
2003 is proving to be a busy year at Studio City Sound. Owner/chief engineer Tom Weir just finished recording and mixing John Oszajca's upcoming release entitled "First Sign of Anything". Oszajca's new album, his first with Universal Records, is being produced by Dave Darling (Boxing Ghandhis, Meredith Brooks) and features a heavy guitar based sound, a departure from his debut album "From Here To There". This is not the only Weir/Darling collaboration taking place at Studio City Sound. The pair are also working on projects with legendary guitar ace, Brian Setzer and his band "The Brian Setzer Trio" as well as the soon to be released new album by EchoBrain (Metallica bassist Jason Newsted's band). Jack Allocco, music producer and composer for Daytime Television's number one rated soap opera, "The Young And The Restless " was in recently producing a song for actress/singer Lauren Woodland, who plays "Brittany" on the show. Tom Weir engineered the session in Studio A. The song recorded was "Sooner or Later", and will be performed by Brittany on an episode scheduled to air mid June. Songwriter/producer, Peter Beckett just completed recording and mixing three songs that he wrote and performed for the new 'Terminator 3' movie. Two of the songs Beckett co-wrote with director Jonathon Mostow. This follows his earlier work for the John Travolta movie 'Basic' (Beckett wrote, sang and produced the end title track). Tom Weir engineered and mixed both projects. Tom Weir has also been recording and mixing Producer Richard Feldman's latest project with Jamaican reggae artist Toots Hibbert. "Toots and Friends", a compilation album featuring Toots singing duets with notable recording artists: No Doubt, Keith Richards, Bonnie Rait, The Roots, Terry Hall and Taj Mahal, will be released on V2 Records. STC Entertainment Client Stevo Bruno Likes It Hard, Loud Producer/owner Stevo Bruno has had his hands full with recent projects, Brides Of Destruction, Prong, Mother's Finest, Dino Cazares (Fear Factory) and Pico Train. Brides Of Destruction are the new all-star line up with Nikki Sixx (Motley Crue) and Tracii Guns (LA Guns). Stevo produced 9 slamming rock tracks for the Brides with samples already up on the web. The CD will be released on-line by July 2003. The CD also includes several "behind-the-scenes" video clips shot and edited at Klown Records Studios. In April the country got their first taste of the Brides over the radio airwaves on Bob Coburn's rock-line which can be heard here: listen to the Rock-line show. The Brides have taken up residency in The Showcase room for tour preparation and more writing. Power trio, Prong, has also just finished their long-awaited album with producer Stevo Bruno in the aquarium at Klown. "This is our best record yet," says front man Tommy Victor, "And it was recorded in less than 8 weeks!" The 14-track album is expected to be released in July 2003. The Prong boys took up residency in the Hell Room during their stay at Klown; very appropriate considering the artwork for the record depicts a version of a tarot death card on the cover. Click here to see Prong at work. Fear Factory leader and founder, Dino Cazares, has been demo-ing tunes at Klown for the past 6 months and is currently starting drum tracks with Stevo. With new Australian drummer, John Bassett, and singer Jose Maldoando, this record might just be the heaviest record of all time.
