Solid State Logic is pleased to announce that the
companys assets have been acquired by a joint venture established
by musician and technologist, Peter Gabriel, and broadcast industry entrepreneur,
David Engelke. The company, which will trade as Solid State Logic, will
continue to design and manufacture mixing consoles and related audio technology
at its Begbroke, Oxford headquarters. The principal investors bring considerable
experience of both the companys main markets: music recording and
broadcast. Peter Gabriels background as an artist is well known,
but he has had a long involvement with technology. Syco Systems, which
he co-founded, developed the Tablet, one of the worlds
first purpose-built digital audio workstations. Real World Multi Media,
part of Peters Real World Group, won awards for both technological
and creative innovation. More recently, he has had success with OD2 (On
Demand Distribution), now the leading European platform provider for the
distribution of on-line music. At the same time his many years as artist
and studio owner at Real World in Wiltshire have given him a passion for
the possibilities of technology, and how it can serve and transform the
process of music making and post production. American David Engelke, formerly
also an SSL console owner, has been involved with production and broadcast
companies including Pinnacle Systems, Montage Group, and Digital Editing
Services and invented several widely adopted technologies in the broadcast
industry. Technologies developed by him and his engineering teams have
earned them three EMMY Awards from the US National Academy of Television
Arts and Sciences and an OSCAR from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences. David Engelke, who currently heads up Broadcast Devices
LLC, spoke about his enthusiasm for the company, The Solid State
Logic brand stands for excellence like no other pro audio company in the
world. We are investing to strengthen the company and bring these brand
values to a broader market through continued innovative product development.
Peter Gabriel added: I have been a long time fan of SSL. Were
very excited about the opportunity of working with the company and to
have a chance to participate in its future and its product development.
Real World has enjoyed a close relationship with the company for many
years. For further information contact: Niall Feldman Solid State

The Producers & Engineers Wing (P&E Wing)
of The Recording Academy broke new ground with the appointment of recording
technologist/pro audio journalist Steph Jorgl as its new Executive Director
and by launching a new remix delivery standards committee headed by Brian
Transeau (BT), a member of the Producers & Engineers Wing Steering
Committee. "The P&E Wing is a key component as the Academy strives
to grow and develop its operational infrastructure to serve its members
in a relevant and focused manner," said Recording Academy President
Neil Portnow. "Steph possesses vast knowledge and understanding that
encompasses broad segments of the technical industry which will be of
great value to the P&E Wing, along with her diverse background and
expertise." For the last six years, Jorgl has worked as a pro audio
journalist, editor and publisher covering new developments in digital
audio, reviewing audio software and hardware, and writing in-the-studio
pieces and feature stories on top producers, composers, engineers, and
sound designers such as Butch Vig, Jimmy Douglass, and Trent Reznor for
Apple.com, Digizine, EQ, Prosoundweb.com, Scratch, and her own Web site,
Audiohead.net. She brings to The Recording Academy more than 13 years
of hands-on industry experience. She studied audio engineering at the
University of California, Santa Cruz. She holds a B.A. in political science
from San Jose State University. Following closely on the heels of the
release of its technical recommendation document, "Guidelines for
Pro Tools Session Interchange" (www.grammy.com/pe_wing/guidelines/index.aspx),
the Producers & Engineers Wing has begun development of a "Remix
Delivery Standards" guideline. The Producers & Engineers Wing
was established for producers, engineers, remixers, manufacturers, technologists,
and other related creative and technical professionals in the recording
community. Currently, 6,000 professionals comprise the Producers &
Engineers Wing. This organized voice for the creative and technical recording
community addresses issues that affect the craft of recorded music, while
ensuring its role in the development of new technologies, recording and
mastering recommendations, and archiving and preservation initiatives. |

Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger plus singer Ian Astbury, known for his
rich baritone voice in the Cult, the band is rounded out by Phil Chen
on bass and Ty Dennis on drums. One distinctive element of the seminal
Los Angeles group is how the musicians - especially the multifaceted Ray
Manzarek - successfully blend rock, jazz-inspired improvisation and Weill-esque

AP -- The Beastie Boys might have to fight for their right to party, but they won't have to defend themselves against claims they stole part of a jazz flutist's recording. Without comment Monday, the Supreme Court let stand a lower court ruling against jazz artist James W. Newton. Newton contended that the punk rappers' 1992 song "Pass the Mic" included a sample from his musical composition "Choir" without his full permission. The Beastie Boys paid a licensing fee for the six-second, three-note segment of Newton's work but failed to pay an additional fee to license the underlying composition. The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed to dismiss Newton's lawsuit alleging copyright infringement. The appeals court reasoned that the short segment in "Pass the Mic" was not distinctive enough to be considered Newton's work. Several members and representatives of the jazz and independent artists community -- including the American Composers Forum, the Electronic Music Foundation and Meet the Composer -- had filed a joint friend-of-the-court brief in support of Newton. They urged the Supreme Court to clarify the scope of copyright law, given the growing practice of digital sampling, or recording a portion of a previously existing song, they say increasingly infringes on their ownership rights. The Beastie Boys burst onto the national music scene in 1986 with their No. 1 album "License to Ill," which featured the party anthem "Fight for Your Right (to Party)." The case is Newton v. Diamond, 04-1219. |
