U2 Unable To Prevent Demolition of Famed Hanover Studios U2, its management and thousands of petitioners have lost their bid to prevent the demolition of Dublin's famed Hanover Studios. Ireland's Planning Board has been given the go-ahead for a redevelopment project that requires the destruction of the studio. Located on Hanover Quay in Dublin, Hanover Studios was most recently used by U2 to record their Grammy-winning album, "All That You Can't Leave Behind". U2's manager, Mr Paul McGuinness, has expressed his unhappiness with the decision. "We moved into this area before it was fashionable or profitable, and U2 being there has affected the perception of the area. It's also a great place for the band to work, and we have no wish to move," he said. "I think it's outrageous that the DDDA (Dublin Dockland Development Authority) should sweep in with a compulsory purchase order at this stage without taking account of our long-standing presence in the area," he added. Mr McGuinness said it was equally outrageous of the DDDA to describe the studio as a shed when it had not viewed the interior of the building. "This is a fully equipped state-of-the-art recording studio and also a rather interesting modern building. It does not look like much from the outside but the interior was designed by architect Felim Dunne," he said. "We bought it in 1992-93, rebuilt it and have been using it as U2's workplace and recording studio since. We sometimes use Windmill Lane if we need more capacity, but the primary recording place for all U2's work since 1994 has been this studio," he added. Also affected by the CPO and in support of U2's petition, is businessman Harry Crosbie who owns an adjoining warehouse. "I feel it's stupid that a band of historic proportions like U2 should be treated this way given what they have done for this country. To remove their studios and put in more of that cursed red brick along the quays is outlandishly stupid." More than 8,000 U2 fans had signed an online petition to preserve the studio. Producer Rob Chiarelli Works Top Acts On SSL XL 9000 K
Producer/mixer Rob Chiarelli has been turning out powerhouse projects on the new Solid State Logic XL 9000 K Series SuperAnalogue console recently installed in Studio A at the newly renovated Larrabee West in West Hollywood, CA. The maiden voyage of the console has included such projects as Will Smith's solo album and title song for the film "Men In Black II," K-Ci & JoJo, LeAnn Rimes and international recording artist Laura Pausini. The XL's superior sound quality coupled with fast performance impressed Chiarelli. "I have been working on SSL consoles for most of my career," says Chiarelli. "When Kevin Mills, the owner of Larrabee told me about the XL, I jumped on the chance to work on it. The console's design, sound quality and speed is nothing short of inspiring." For the past two months, Chiarelli has continuously booked Studio A getting to know every facet of the 72-input console, especially the automation. "When you are working on a project, it is very important to not let technology get in the way of creativity." explains Chiarelli. "The XL allows me to save mix changes really quickly, so when the artist wants something, I can simply save where I am and not blow the artistic flow. For example, when Will or LeAnn want to try a few things out, I just hit save and it doesn't interrupt the session. The XL is awesome." One very valuable feature of the XL is its ability to accept data from SSL's very popular, industry standard SL 9000 J Series. This came in very handy while working on the Will Smith project, as the original tracks were recorded on the J Series. "We simply put the J Series MO into the XL's drive and it converted," says Chiarelli. "Everything was spot on in recalling the J Series data. This saved us several hours, and in some cases days because we didn't have to go back and re-program the EQs and automation data, etc." In the final analysis, it's the sound of the console that is the key, and for Chiarelli, the sound is sterling. "With the XL, I don't have to do as much to each signal to get a great sound," states Chiarelli. "This means I can maintain a very pure signal path and that makes the music sparkle. The console sounds incredible. I also love the fact that I can have Pro Tools in the center section of the console. Everything on this console makes sense. The dynamics section is punchy. The EQs are great. It's laid out perfectly, easy to operate and it is designed to handle 5.1 surround situations." For more information on Rob Chiarelli, please contact Allyson Ress or visit www.finalmix.com. For further information on Larrabee Studios, contact studio manager Holly Bavier at 310-657-6750. Paul Schwartz Steps Into Producer Role For Dublin Duo Paul Schwartz, who as an artist has sold nearly 700,000 records worldwide, all of which he arranged and produced, has stepped outside the self production circle. Schwartz, who's most recent release on RCA Victor/Windham Hill Earthbound just entered the Billboard New Age charts at #19, was tapped by BMG UK to produce and arrange the debut recording of Shimoon, a Dublin based duo described as Enya times two. Shimoon is Ruth Cahill, 21, from Dublin, who at the tender age of 15, was invited to sing for Princess Diana at the Royal Tournament in Earls Court and Emily Aylmer, 23, an award winning singer who has trained at the Dublin College of Music since childhood. Schwartz took time out from Shimoon preparations to co-write and associate produce a track with Carlos Santana and producer KC Porter. Scheduled for the next Santana recording, the piece entitled "(Curacion) Sunshine On Water" is based on Paul's song "Miserere" from his CD State of Grace, the number eleven New Age recording of 2001 according to Billboard. Schwartz is also ready for Christmas '02. Paul's arrangement, production and performance of "Lo, How A Rose", a traditional Christmas carol from the 16th century, will be featured on A Windham Hill Christmas. Other artists on the compilation include Jim Brickman, Liz Story and Snuffy Walden. For more information contact manager Mike Gormley ^BACK UP^

The Mastering Lab & Sadie Take Classic Jazz Releases SACD
The Mastering Lab and its Owner and President, mastering engineer Doug Sax, are employing one of the first of SADiE's newest mastering and digital editing systems, designed specifically for Sony's acclaimed Super Audio CD high-resolution digital audio disc format. The SADiE Super Audio CD Mastering Editor is in the final stages of development, and being used daily in a beta-test environment at The Mastering Lab. At The Mastering Lab, the SADiE Super Audio CD workstation is being utilized on a series of classic jazz recordings, including performances by John Coltrane, Bill Evans and Art Pepper. These will become the foundation for an ongoing series for collectors, released on the so-called hybrid, dual-layer Super Audio CD disc, which offers both Super Audio CD and standard CD compatibility on the same disc. "These are great-sounding recordings," observes Sax. "They were recorded on tape using tube electronics, and we're playing them back the same way to retain the original feel and sound of the recordings. Once we transfer them to the SADiE system, we can do all of the usual functions we do on our other SADiE workstations for other mastering projects. The beta process has been interesting, though, helping SADiE further refine the system." Robert Hadley, Mastering Engineer at The Mastering Lab, has been working directly with the SADiE Super Audio CD Mastering Editor on a day to day basis. He says the platform's performance has been every bit as good as that of other SADiE systems he uses. "This new SADiE system accepts the 1-bit DSD stream," Hadley explains. "Once we have the information into the workstation, then it's a transparent situation in terms of using it to do things like editing and sequencing. It's good to be a part of this, because I love the way the SADiE workstations perform. This new SADiE system will be on the leading edge of this new high-resolution audio format." The Mastering Lab, which has been in operation for 33 years, installed a SADiE ARTEMiS workstation last year in Doug Sax's personal mastering suite. For further information, contact The Mastering Lab at (323) 466-8589. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, SADiE, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of SADiE U.K., designer of the critically-acclaimed SADiE Disk Editor. Manchester's In The City Fest Returns September 13-17
IN THE CITY, the UK's annual conference is moving this year. It's moving to Salford, just across the Irwell River from founder city Manchester, to take advantage of the great new five star Hotel, the Lowry and it's state of the art convention facilities. And it's moving its goalposts, making the entertainment of the daytime sessions tougher and more responsive to the needs of the industry that In The City serves. The dates are the 13th - 17th September, getting under way with registration and networking on the Friday evening, recognizing the pressures of an industry that needs it's weekdays and the requirement for a major opening party on the Friday night. The theme of ITC for 2002 will be "The State of the Nation" - Are we an industry in crisis? In The City is the most vital moment in the music calendar to debate and plan the way forward. ITC intends to publish the core statements and relevant conclusions in a document entitled "State of the Nation" to be released immediately after September's event. In The City Live will take over the streets of Manchester and Salford. 5 nights, fifty venues, 500 artists, DJ's and Bands. In The City Live is quite simply the biggest urban music festival in Europe and for 2002 will simply get bigger and better, for the industry and the public. In The City Unsigned will continue to provide the only true showcase in the UK for the brightest young bands, taking over a cluster of venues all within 500 yards of the conference HQ, the superb new 5 star Lowry Hotel. ITC Unsigned's reputation which takes us from Oasis to Coldplay is unparalleled. On Saturday, the Dance Summit, now in it's third year, will take the 10th anniversary of Cream as a starting point for checking the heart-beat of the dance-sector. And the dance boys will provide ITC with it's opening party on the Friday night. Interactive City, now in it's fourth year, and one of the few intelligent survivors of the dot-com meltdown, will take place alongside In The City this year, on Monday and Tuesday, the 16th and 17th September. ITCFM, their designated radio station will broadcast for a full two weeks around the conference and festival, in particular featuring the music and the opinions of ITC's new bands and artists. If you love music and care about your industry, the seminar rooms, the venues and the bar of In The City are the only places to be in September, 2002
