The 113th Audio Engineer Society Convention returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center on October 5-8, 2002. Will you be there? After last September's tragic events, the subsequent rescheduling and downsizing of AES 112 as well as the past year's overall industry downturn - the big question in October has got to be: What next? Come see what your peers have to say as well as the very latest gear and products from hundreds of audio manufacturers and other companies. Here are just a few highlights of the upcoming show: NARAS will host their 14th annual Grammy Recording Sound Table (Saturday, October 5 4:00 pm – 6:00 PM), moderated by Howard Massey. Join moderator Jimmy Douglass and a group of today's industry hit-makers in a discussion on how to wear more than one hat in the studio, from the creative aspects to the high-tech details. Moderator Jimmy Douglass' discography includes platinum selling acts including Missy Elliot, Lenny Kravitz, Jodeci and Snoop Dogg, and a number of rock legends including Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Carlos Santana. The Society of Professional Audio Recording Services (SPARS) will host their Business Panel (Monday, October 7 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM). TEC Awards Honor Robbie Robertson & Geoff Emrick
Renowned producer/engineer Geoff Emerick will be inducted into the TEC Awards Hall of Fame and recording artist/composer Robbie Robertson will be awarded the prestigious Les Paul Award, at the 18th Annual Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards, to be held Monday, October 7, at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in Los Angeles. Geoff Emerick is best known for his work with The Beatles, including the Revolver and Sergeant Pepper's albums, and Paul McCartney, with whom he has worked on more than a dozen albums. His adventurous and experimental touch has also been evident on albums by artists as varied as The Zombies, Badfinger, Robin Trower, America, Art Garfunkel and Elvis Costello. Robbie Robertson first rose to prominence as part of The Hawks, the back-up group for rockabilly star Ronnie Hawkins, and continued on as that group became The Band, taking Bob Dylan's music electric and creating groundbreaking albums of its own. Robertson also delved into film scoring, working closely with director Martin Scorcese. His solo recordings include both conceptual works and modern music, with ancient roots in his Native American heritage. "We couldn't have two more deserving recipients for our lifetime achievement awards," said Hillel Resner, president of the Mix Foundation, which annually presents the TEC Awards. "Emerick has experimented with technological resources to achieve works of unique artistic beauty; and Robertson's multifaceted career conveys an ongoing dedication to expanding the borders of our musical frontiers." The TEC Awards Hall of Fame was created 1988 to honor individuals whose careers have best exemplified the spirit of technical innovation and creative excellence in professional audio. The Les Paul Award recognizes musical artists and others whose body of work has epitomized the creative application of audio technology. It sponsored by Gibson Musical Instruments of Nashville, TN. Proceeds of the TEC Awards are donated to organizations working to promote hearing safety in the music environment, and to scholarships for students of the audio arts and sciences. A Busy Summer On The Road for Remote Recording Services July and August have kept Remote Recording Services on the road. They kicked off July with a live broadcast of the Philadelphia 4th of July show, with headliner Brian McKnight. After that it was off to the Tweeter Center in Mansfield, MA, for two days of recording Ozzfest, soon to be released on CD, and SACD. The "Silver Studio" then headed down to New Jersey to record a live EP for Wind-up Records band "Boy Sets Fire". The truck then turned around, and headed up to the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT. RRS recorded the audio for "Dare To Dream", a cancer fundraiser that will air on NBC in September 2002. August found the truck in Chicago, recording the cast album for "Movin'Out" - a musical based on Billy Joel songs, and choreographed by Twyla Tharpe. RRS is also nominated for a TEC Award for their work on "The Concert For New York City". XTA Heads Out On Summer Tours With Music's Biggest Acts The music industry's top acts are on the road this summer, and many are taking XTA crossovers with them. Tom Petty's world tour kicked off earlier this summer, with renowned FOH mixer Robert Scovill at the helm of a massive sound system put together by ProMix/Electrotec of Las Vegas. At its core, the system has four XTA DP226 Speaker Management Systems, five DP224 crossovers and three DP100 units, all working to create a fabulous-sounding show. "Engineers love the XTA DP Series crossovers because they sound so transparent," explains Martyn "Ferrit" Rowe, Audio Concert Touring Supervisor for ProMix/Electrotec. Meanwhile, Bob Dylan's latest tour kicked off on July 11 with the taping of an HBO special. Notable is the fact that this year's Dylan tour will be an all-digital affair, starting with A-D conversion of microphone inputs at the stage, then routing to a new Yamaha PMD-1 digital FOH console. "This tour will reap the benefits of having an all-digital signal path by making sure the crossovers are also digital," emphasizes Rowe. "The sound will start digital at the stage and stay that way to the speakers, right through the console, the signal processing and the crossovers." XTA is a British manufacturer of signal processing equipment for the live sound, permanent installations, broadcasting, and recording markets, and is exclusively distributed in the U.S. by Group One Ltd. of Farmingdale, New York. Group One is also the exclusive US distributor for Blue Sky International, Milab Microphones, and Celestion Professional Products, as well as a number of prominent lighting products. For more information on the complete range of XTA products, contact Sue Adamson, Group One Ltd. Tel: (631) 249-1399; Fax: (631) 753-1020; Web: www.g1ltd.com ^BACK UP^

Ned Evett To Open For Satriani on Final Leg of European Tour Guitar stylist Ned Evett is bringing his fretless glass-guitar experience to England and Ireland when he opens for Grammy-nominated guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani later this month. Satriani, who is touring to promote his new album "Strange Beautiful Music," will play four dates in the United Kingdom, all of which will feature an opening set from Evett. Evett, one of the world's foremost fretless guitarists and the inventor of the glass-necked fretless guitar, will unveil several songs from his recently completed record, "Circus Liquor," which he is currently shopping to US labels and overseas licensees. He'll also perform a song from "Fretless Guitar Masters," the world's first compilation recording of fretless guitarists showcasing 16 songs by Evett and seven other acoustic and electric fretless guitar players from Belgium, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Fretless guitars derive their unique sound from the musician's fingers engaging the strings against a fingerboard without interposing frets. "Fretless guitar is a close relative to slide guitar in many ways, with the fingertips taking the place of the slide," Evett explains. "Rather than selecting and sounding a fixed note, like on a piano, fretless guitar players move the note to them using their fingers, ears, and eyes, like on a violin. From a melodic perspective, fretless guitars are very free instruments, giving players direct control over every aspect of a note's pitch." Evett plays a Fernandes Fretless Native Pro with a mirrored glass fingerboard of his own creation, as well as stainless-steel and aluminum fingerboard models built by Fernandes Guitars and Boise, Idaho, luthier Steve Abbett. A Boise native and resident himself, Evett sells his guitars and performs custom retrofits via the Internet. His FretlessGuitar.com is not only a profitable website, but the exclusive distributor of Fernandes fretless electric guitars, as well. Evett guitars are played by such artists as Adrian Belew of the legendary progressive rock group King Crimson, Emmy-nominated composer Stephen James Taylor, Dweezil Zappa, and Martin Gore of Depeche Mode. Evett and his music are gathering increasing acclaim. According to Satriani, "Ned Evett plays a mirrored glass fingerboard in a completely new and exciting way." The Seattle Stranger writes that "Evett's technique on the fretless guitar comes praised from every quarter, especially his performance of what are described as 'unearthly, theremin-like glissandos that create whole new landscapes of sonic possibilities.'" Evett's groundbreaking, experimental debut, "An Introduction to Fretless Guitar," and the "Fretless Guitar Masters" CD are available online at FretlessGuitar.com. ^BACK UP^
Paris' Guillaume Tell Studios Renovates Studio A
After the installation of a 96-channel SSL SL 9000 J series SuperAnalogue console which replaced the former SL 9080 J in Studio A, Guillaume Tell Studios has completed further renovation at its facility. A brand new monitoring system from Coastal Acoustics complements the multiformat mixing monitoring feature of the SL 9096 J. The 5.1 surround system comprises left, centre and right Boxer T5 main monitors powered by Cyberlogic and Chevin amplifiers, Genelec 1094A sub-bass units and Boxer T3 surrounds. Roland Guillotel, owner of Guillaume Tell Studios, reveals, "We made the decision to change the console in our Studio A earlier this year because it was nearly six years old. We've always been faithful to SSL and opted for a 96-channel 9000 J, the largest one installed in continental Europe." Guillotel adds, "The improvements brought to the studio, considered for a long time, are the results of personal reflections and suggestions from engineers and clients. Regarding multiformat, this is far from being a new concept to us because we've been producing film soundtracks in Dolby Surround for 15 years and in 5.1 format for eight years now." The artists and producers who have worked at Guillaume Tell comprise a veritable "who's who" of both the national and international recording community. Mega producers such as Phil Ramone, Bob Clearmountain, Hugh Padgham and Tony Visconti declare that Guillaume Tell complex is one of their favorites when coming to France. Infkt truthsm Returns For Encore Summer Tour In 41 States
truthsm, the largest anti-tobacco campaign for teens, announces its summer 2002 INFKT truthsm Tour. The tour starts June 2002 and runs through September 2002 with venues in six major cities: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Kansas City, Seattle and Denver. The INFKT truthsm Tour delivers strong messages on the tobacco industry's marketing practices and more to teens at some of the summer's hottest events and venues that draw large teen crowds. Throughout the summer, 60 truthsm youth marketers will reach out to young people at these events and infect hundreds of thousands of teens with truthsm. The INFKT truthsm Tour arrives at events in high-tech truthsm trucks rigged with state-of-the-art DJ equipment and video monitors, video gaming stations, XM Satellite radios, and Internet access. Each stop brings out the city's hottest DJ's to guest spin, impromptu rap sessions, join-in freestyle demos and giveaways. The tour will stop in 200 cities in 41 states over four months. "This is a great way for people to really get their hands on truthsm and have a great time doing it," said truthsm marketer Arion Fletcher of Atlanta. "Plus, we will be able to reach more teens than ever before." The award-winning truthsm campaign was recently hailed for helping to slash youth smoking rates. The "Monitoring the Future" study, released in December 2001, reported dramatic declines in smoking rates among 8th, 10th, and 12th graders and cited the truthsm campaign as one of the reasons for this public health victory. The study was sponsored by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services and conducted by the University of Michigan. The bottom line is that truthsm gives teens facts about the marketing tactics of the tobacco industry and about tobacco products. Once teens have the facts, they can make their own decisions about tobacco use. The effort is funded by the American Legacy Foundation, which was created by the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement between the tobacco industry and attorneys general of 46 states. To find out more about the INFKT truthsm Tour go to www.thetruth.com.
