Borders and TAXI Discover Unsigned Acts "Under The Radar"
Borders Books and Music today announced it will work with TAXI, the world's leading independent artist and repertoire company, to regionally discover, distribute and promote unsigned musical acts who are already superstars in their local communities. The program, called "Under the Radar," will give select TAXI members the opportunity for review by Borders expert buying staff. If a band or artist is chosen for inclusion in the program, their CD will be carried on the Borders teamed with Amazon.com e-commerce site and in up to 35 Borders stores in the market where they have a strong local following. "Under the Radar" offers unsigned talent the opportunity for distribution and to establish a sales track record two necessary ingredients for consideration by the major record labels," says Len Cosimano, vice president of multimedia merchandising at Borders Group. "The music industry needs a new crop of talent, and Borders and TAXI have responded with this unique program sure to unearth new and note-worthy sounds from around the country." "We are extremely proud to be part of this groundbreaking program," says TAXI CEO, Michael Laskow. "There are so many great acts that the major labels can't sign because of limited resources. "Under the Radar" is going to bring the very best unsigned artists directly to consumers who thrive on discovering new music." "Under the Radar" CDs will be distributed by TNT Media and sold in-store and online for $9.99. In addition, they will be prominently featured regionally for three months in Borders' music sections and on listening stations. Discovered artists will also perform a series of in-store concerts as part of a Borders store tour. If the buzz grows and sales soar on a particular CD, Borders may choose to carry it in stores nationwide. TAXI will provide Borders music buyers with CDs featuring the highest degree of talent from their membership pool. Borders buyers will then choose six finalists each quarter from a wide variety of music genres. Criterion for consideration includes quality of music, a demonstrated local following and the ability to manufacture at least 500 CDs. The selected artists will net $5 per CD about 300 percent more than most major label royalties. Borders and TNT have set up a quick-pay system enabling the musicians to manufacture additional CDs to keep up with demand. Additional information on how to become a TAXI member and enter a CD for review will be available in Borders stores. TAXI is the world's leading Independent A&R company, helping unsigned artists, bands, and songwriters get their music heard by major and independent record labels, music publishers, and music supervisors working on films and TV shows for more than a decade. Based in Calabasas, California, TAXI has worked with over 20,000 musicians from more than 30 countries, and 600 music companies.
Former Chung King Studios Manager Forms TI Management Tom Irre, who managed New York City's Chung King Studios from April 1997 to April 2002, recently launched his TI MANAGEMENT operation offering worldwide representation for producers, engineers and also providing complete studio booking solutions. According to Irre, the decision to launch TI MANAGEMENT resulted from factors including the desire to be his own boss as well as the economic climate and its effect on the entertainment industry. "The timing felt right," notes Irre when questioned about his departure from Chung King and his decision to open up shop. "Rather than sit around crossing my fingers until business improved, I decided to take the opportunity and make something of it. I developed a lot of relationships during my years at Chung King and wanted to continue working with those people. It made perfect sense." The first person to approach Irre about representation was world-class mixer, remixer and producer Bonzai Jimi Caruso. "A few days after I left my previous position, I met Bonzai at a party and we discussed the idea of management. Essentially, we agreed immediately to work together and that was it." In the following month, Irre made contact with additional producers and engineers adding industry heavyweights Robbie Adams, Prince Charles Alexander, Ron Allaire, Jamey Staub and Commissioner Gordon Williams to the roster. Confident in the list of producers and mixers, he added some fresh talent to handle tracking and additional mix work including John O'Mahony, Jamie Siegel and John Wydrycs. "I wanted the ability to handle any stage in the production process and these engineers provide that. Additionally, they're all wizards with Pro Tools and understand the audio and computer sides of the system. That's important for file management. You don't want your mixer spending hours trying to solve the puzzle of disorganized digital audio files, you want them mixing the record." In addition to worldwide representation, TI MANAGEMENT also offers free studio booking services. The service is currently available for bookings in the northeast region of the country and will add additional coverage should the demand be sufficient. "I think this service is perfectly suited to label and management people who feel overwhelmed by the technical aspects of booking sessions. Without daily exposure to the equipment and plethora of new digital storage formats, it's hard to keep current. It's also designed to lighten the workload on A&R and A&R Administration departments. They make one call to TI MANAGEMENT instead of ten calls to different studios." For more information visit TI MANAGEMENT or contact Tom Irre. Slamdance & RPM Direct Unite For "Homegrown" Music Series Aiming to develop its support of new musical talent, much in the same way it has done for new filmmakers, Slamdance has launched The Slamdance "Homegrown" Music Series -- live music events which showcase local bands in cities around the US. The largest showcase event will take place during Slamdance (concurrent with Sundance Film Fest.) in during January 18-25 in Park City, Utah. Capitalizing on the success of RPM Direct's Unsigned series, Slamdance has partnered with RPM to deliver the unsigned musical talent that will be featured at all live events. All music submissions for the RPM Direct Presents: Unsigned CD series will automatically be considered for the Slamdance Homegrown music showcases. "RPM Direct is in a perfect position to help connect Slamdance with unsigned artists through the huge volume of submissions currently being received for our own unsigned music series. Their live showcases are yet another great way RPM Direct is helping to expose unsigned talent. I cannot encourage artists, managers, publishers and producers enough to submit their music," says RPM Direct's Jerimaya Grabher. Now entrants will be qualified to win a CD replication package from Crest National, inclusion on Vol. 2 and a possible slot during one of Slamdance's live showcase events. "For years, Slamdance has recognized and celebrated the creative synergy between filmmakers and musicians. The Homegrown Music Series give us the opportunity to more actively cultivate this synergy while providing great exposure for emerging music talent. Homegrown is the beginning of Slamdance's mission to support up and coming bands and solo artists much in the same way we've supported first-time filmmakers," said Slamdance Co-founder, Shane Kuhn. Homegrown producer Chrys Coulter added "We're primarily interested in showcasing energetic and talented musicians of all genres. The events will definitely have a distinct Slamdance flavor, and anyone who's been to Park City for the festivals know we throw some of the best and most unusual parties with the least amount of posturing." Slamdance started in January 1995, when a group of first-time directors screened their films concurrent with the Sundance Film Festival. Today, Slamdance has expanded into a support system for new filmmakers - including a popular screenplay competition and year-round ON THE ROAD screening events. The festival is still organized and programmed by filmmakers (mainly Slamdance alumni). Each year several Slamdance films find distribution deals and almost all receive invitations to other festivals around the world. Slamdance films also have won Spirit Awards, a Palm D'or and even an Oscar! For all inquiries, please please visit RPM Direct's Rules & Regulations and Frequently Asked Questions pages. Beth Orton, Aimee Mann Join Amnesty International Cause
The global human rights organization Amnesty International is set to kick off a benefit concert series with an August 21 show at Los Angeles' John Anson Ford Theatre featuring co-headliners Beth Orton and Aimee Mann. The series is expected to run through next spring in certain US cities, with Chicago and New York as likely locations.
The Amnesty International concerts will feature commentary by activists, artists, and celebrities in addition to the live music performances. The organization also plans to use the shows as a forum to shed light on what it calls prisoners of conscience (POC), activists who are currently being held for charges relating to "non-violent expression of their beliefs." The organization will entreat concertgoers to petition the POCs' respective captors or governments for their release, providing form letters at the concerts. "By working with popular artists, Amnesty International hopes to expand the grassroots movement that during our 40-year history has helped free 40,000 political prisoners," Amnesty International executive director Dr. William F. Schulz said in a statement. "The support of these artists will bolster Amnesty International's reach to young activists, who are critical to the movement for social change." No artists except Mann and Orton have been yet confirmed for participation in the series. Orton's latest album, "Daybreaker" (Astralwerks Records), was released last week in North America and debuted at No. 8 on the U.K. album chart last month. Mann's fourth solo album, "Lost in Space" (SuperEgo), is due next Tuesday (Aug. 13) For more information visit Amnesty International.^BACK UP^
