Atlantis Group Recording Studio in Santa Monica,
CA just passed a milestone, celebrating five years in business. "Considering
we've survived a voice-over strike, 9/11, a recession, a war, and a very
tumultuous time in our industry, I've got to credit our staff and our
loyal clients for getting us this far," said company president John
Chominsky. Atlantis Group has not just survived, but prospered. The recent
addition of another studio equipped with a Digidesign ICON system has
complimented their commitment to stay on top of the latest technology.
Whether it's the state of the art equipment, the staff's friendly personality,
or their desirable location with proximity to the 3rd St. Promenade, Atlantis
Group continues to wow local, out of state and even an international clientele.
"We're flattered that many of our clients prefer to fly out to be
present for a session in lieu of just patching in," added staff recording
engineer Jaimie Siedow. "Lately we've been doing a bunch of sessions
for clients from Arizona, Chicago, Canada and even Australia". Originally
conceived as an audio post-production facility catering to the advertising
community (radio and TV spot work), Atlantis Group has evolved to a multifaceted
audio facility that caters to video games, indie films, and now even supports
a music division. Eargasm Studios was created as a sister company that
focuses on music mixing and recording. Sean Graham, staff engineer stated,
"It was a natural evolution for us. Nowadays you need to diversify
your services." |

Moir/Marie Entertainment operated by sole remaining
owner Lisa Marie sued former co-owner Steve Moir and his Moir Entertainment
last month over the two managers business breakup. The complaint,
filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, states that Moir split the
company earlier this year after secretly forming another company and taking
MME client/producers Brendan OBrien (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots)
and Phil Ek (Modest Mouse, The Shins) plus some employees with him. Other
high-profile clients such as Ron Aniello (Lifehouse, Guster), Chris Lord-Alge
(Green Day, Black Eyed Peas) and Tom Lord-Alge (Blink 182, Avril Lavigne)
then left MME and moved to Nettwerk Producer Management. MME alleges in
the complaint that Marie began working with Moir in 1989, with Marie representing
producers and Moir shifting his services from producers to industry executives.
In 1996 they formed MME with the same responsibilities. Marie held a 50%
equity share of the company and Moir with wife Susan Moir sharing the
remaining equity shares equally. When labels began consolidating, the
complaint says, Moir began losing many executive clients and wanted to
work with the producers. He then set up Moir Entertainment, taking confidential
client information and interfering with Maries relationships with
many top producer clients, MME alleges. MME seeks an unspecified amount
of damages for misappropriation of trade secrets, breach of fiduciary
duty and contract, intentional interference with contractual relations
and other claims. The claims are without merit, Moir tells
Billboard.biz. All clients went where they thought they would be
best served without any interference. I am confident all of this will
come out at trial. --From Susan Butler, N.Y. / Billboard Bulletin |

Ruby Red Productions' owner/producer and Epic recording
artist Butch Walker, took a few days off from his touring scheduling to
fit some sessions this summer. Epic recording artists and Japanese sensations
Puffy AmiYumi tracked "Radio Tokyo" and "Call Me What You
Like," written and produced by Walker, engineered by Paul Hager,
and engineered and mixed by Russ-T Cobb. The songs are to be included
on a February 2006 release. Look out for Tommy Lee's Tommyland: The Ride
dropping in August. Walker wrote and lent his vocals to the first single
"Good Times," which is also the theme to Tommy's reality show
Tommy Lee Goes To College on NBC this fall. Cobb put Ruby Red to good
use this summer, producing/engineering the new release Every Trick's A
Good One for Atlanta local artists The Swear (www.theswear.com). The record
is due out on October 18, 2005. Cobb stated, "The Swear session was
cool because it was nothing over the top, it was very stripped down rock.
Elizabeth [Elkins, The Swear's lead vocalist] wrote great songs and I
really didn't want the production to get in the way of it." Atlanta
artist Tim Brantley
selected Cobb to produce and engineer his second record The Lion of Truth
slated for a fall release. Lending their considerable talent to the project
were: Kenny Creswell on drums, Tony Reyes on bass, I Nine's Bryan Gibson
on cello, Cobb on guitar and percussion and Brantley on piano and the
Wurlitzer. Cobb had this to say about the session, "Recording Lion
was great because we had an amazing group of musicians playing well-crafted
songs with Tim's compelling voice." Warner Brothers recording artists
My Chemical Romance stopped in the midst of the Warped Tour to have Russ-T
do edits for a live show filmed in Orlando, FL. The show will be aired
on MTV in the coming months. Ruby Red Productions www.rubyredproductions.net

Rupert Neve, a prime mover in the development of modern mixing consoles, will deliver the Keynote Speech, Where Audio Comes Alive, at the 119th AES Convention at noon on Friday, October 7th at New Yorks Javits Center. Rupert Neve has led a remarkable life, dedicated to perfecting the art of audio reproduction, said AES Executive Director, Roger Furness. His career spans over 60 years and has influenced generations of audio designers. We are honored to have him present this years Keynote address. Mr. Neves speech will focus on Recording: Interest in the satisfactory recording, storage and reproduction of sound has never been higher, he says, adding the eternal question, Have we got it right? Rupert Neve, began his life in audio in Argentina, mending radios to bring people news of WW II. Arriving in England at 17, he converted a retired US army ambulance into a mobile studio, recording choirs, music festivals and public events on 78 RPM lacquer disks. These early steps led to his pioneering development of the modern recording console. By 1964, Neve had developed high performance transistor equipment that replaced traditional valve designs. His first client for the new transistor equipment was Phillips Records Ltd . The success of these units led to orders from Phillips and other recording studios for mixing consoles. These attained a reputation for sonic clarity and excellent workmanship. Demand grew rapidly and by 1973 the Neve team had grown to over 500 members worldwide. During this period Neve introduced 'Moving Fader Automation', or NECAM, the first moving fader system. In 1976, a Neve 16/4 console had been equipped with machine control and legendary producer George Martin was invited to try out the new system. After a day remixing masters his comment was, "How soon can I have one?" Rupert Neve was inducted into the Mix Magazine Hall of Fame in1989. He received the 1997 Technical Grammy Award, was honored as Man of the Century, by Studio Sound Magazine in 1999, and was selected by his peers as the Number One Audio Personality of the 20th Century. Over the last 20 years, operating as ARN Consultants, Mr. Neve collaborated with a number of manufacturers to produce some of the finest audio consoles the industry has ever seen (or heard) -- including the Amek 9098, the Focusrite Forte and Studio models, and with Legendary Audio, Masterpiece Mastering, Summit Audio and Taylor Guitars -- to produce a variety of audio products, from preamplifiers to fully automated analog mixing consoles. Now based in Texas, Mr. Neve established Rupert Neve Designs in April 2005 and launched The Portico range of modular preamplifiers, equalizers, dynamics, image controllers and other new high performance products. 119th AES Convention Where Audio Comes Alive - Jacob Javits Center, NYC October 7 10, 2005. www.aes.org |

Todd Whitener, Ian DSouza, Matt Taul, Hugo Ferreira, Karen Dsouza and Elliot Blakey |
Nashville has been hot this year but not just on
the streets. The studios are jammed with platinum acts from every genre
and the new kids on the block, Karian Studios seem to be leading
the way. No sooner had American Idol winner, Carrie Underwood left the
resort studio when Maverick Records act, Tantric checked in for three
weeks to mix with producer/engineer Elliott Blakey. The guys from Tantric:
vocalist Hugo Ferreira, guitarist Todd Whitener, and drummer Matt Taul
are regulars in the Nashville studio scene doing most of their
first two records here. They are, however, first timers at Nashvilles
newest and most buzzed about facility. It feels good to just be
pampered, said Ferreira of Karian Studios five star client services
package. Producer/engineer Blakey, was most impressed with the value of
the studio not just the pampering aspects. I still cant believe
how fair and competitive the day rates are. And the fact that all of the
amenities are included and not add ons is a plus. The fact that
it sounds so incredible in here makes it the perfect studio, he
says of the SSL studio with Pro Tools HD Accel. We have been able
to mix a great record and have a good time while doing it. For more
information about Karian Studios please visit their website at www.karianstudios.com

When most people think of recording studios, their thoughts usually
settle on traditional music industry hubs such as New York, Los Angeles
or Nashville. But, musician and sound engineer John Parks is hoping to
change all that with the official opening of Saint Claire Recording, an
8,000 square foot recording/retreat complex situated on 14 acres of pastoral,
Lexington, KY countryside. Features rarely found in other studios include four well-appointed on-site guest rooms, recreational facilities, and a fully stocked kitchen with available catering, a spacious patio with hot tub, a conference room, as well as a cozy lounge area with a fireplace. All these amenities constitute an environment that is both creative and relaxed. We want musicians from all backgrounds to be inspired to work hard and play hard while at Saint Claire, John Parks says. As the founder and chairman of Citizens Commerce National Bank of Versailles and a prominent local businessman in central Kentucky, Will Parks refers to the studio as a Field of Dreams. Both he and son John hope to market Lexington, KY, as a trendy new destination for recording artists both successful and undiscovered. The perfect formula would be to book 60-70 percent of the year with major artists and the remainder would be comprised of local/regional talent, according to John Parks. Designed by renowned Canadian studio designers Pilchner-Schoustal, the center-piece of Saint Claires spacious control room is an 80 input SSL 9000J mixing console. All- digital recording is done via industry standard Pro Tools HD3 and RADAR systems. Rounding out the studios extensive equipment array are pieces from NEVE, Tube-Tech, Lexicon, API, and UREI. Equally impressive is the main tracking room which features 18 foot ceilings and 4 isolation booths. Saint Claires unique design and architecture has already earned it a nomination for a prestigious 2005 TEC Award for creative studio design. Saint Claire was one of five studios selected by a nominating panel of prominent professionals from all areas of the audio industry. The 2005 TEC Award winners will be announced this October at the 119th Audio Engineering Society Show in New York City. A huge fan of progressive rock artists such as King Crimson, Genesis, and Rush, studio owner John Parks studied engineering and live sound at the Full Sail multi-media school in Winter Park, FL and interned at Castle Music in Franklin, TN, prior to taking the reins of Saint Claire Recording. I wanted to build a facility here in Kentucky to compete with major studios all over the country, says John Parks. For more information on Saint Claire Recording, visit www.saint-claire.com. |

The IFPI, the organization that promotes the interests
of the international recording industry worldwide, has welcomed a landmark
court judgment establishing that the internet peer-to-peer operator Kazaa
is illegal, and called on similar networks throughout the world to stop
infringing copyright or face the legal consequences. The judgment, coming
just 10 weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling against the 'file-sharing'
operator Grokster, concludes the 18-month trial of the best-known international
file-swapping service and helps to lay down the law for the new generation
of unauthorized peer-to-peer operators. The federal court of Australia
ruled that Kazaa--until recently the world's biggest single internet piracy
operation with 2.4 million users worldwide--is an illegal business that
is liable for copyright infringement. The move is part of a global trend
clarifying the rules around internet music distribution. A court ruling
in Korea last month required the peer-to-peer service Soribada to stop
unauthorized file swapping on its network or shut down. The ruling in
Sydney by Justice Murray Wilcox is the culmination of legal proceedings,
which were brought by the Australian recording industry in 2004 against
a number of parties involved in Kazaa. Judge Wilcox ruled that companies
and individuals associated with Kazaa knowingly facilitated and profited
from massive copyright infringement, failed to take any measures to stop
it and must now start to filter its infringing recordings within two months
or face closure. Justice Wilcox made findings of liability against Sharman
Networks, LEF Interactive Pty Ltd, Altnet Inc, and Brilliant Digital Entertainment
Inc, along with executives Nicola Hemming and Kevin Bermeister. In his
landmark judgment Justice Wilcox concluded that Sharman had power to prevent,
or at least substantially reduce, the incidence of copyright file sharing.
Yet Sharman did nothing; even when it introduced KMD v3 [the latest version
of the software] one week before commencement of the trial of these proceedings.
IFPI represents the recording industry worldwide with over 1450 members
in 75 countries and affiliated industry associations in 48 countries.

Glenwood Place Studio A |
Glenwood Place is proud to announce the re-opening of Studio A. Neither fire nor flood could keep the North Hollywood, CA studio from reopening this room. The Young brothers of AC/DC, Angus and Malcolm,
now each have one of Mackie's new Digital X Bus X.200 recording consoles
in their personal studios-located in the Netherlands and London respectively.
In addition, they have both specified Mackie HDR24/96 hard disk recorders
and completed their updates with a pair of Mackie HR824 Active Studio
Monitors in each studio. Acting on a strong recommendation from Paul "Pab"
Boothroyd, who is AC/DC's FOH engineer and audio consultant for their
recording studios, Angus also read every review and piece of information
he could gather on the Digital X Bus. This was followed by a call to Mackie
and an on-site demo that showed him just how easy it was to get the most
out of the new console. In their previous studio configuration, they fed
the output from their recordings into a Neve mixer, and then used separate
Fairchild compressors to create the sound they casually describe as "that
classic valve, phat thing." Unfortunately, after years of service,
their trusted compressors became unreliable, and the brothers were fed
up with having to give them a thump every now and then to keep them going.
With that, Both Malcolm and Angus opted to specify a Universal Audio UAD-1
DSP card for their new Mackie consoles-giving them faithful emulations
of favorites like the 1176LN and of course, their trusted Fairchild compressor.
Each Mackie Digital X Bus will support the use of both VST plug-ins as
well as accommodate up to three Universal Audio UAD-1 cards. For more

Having built credence since opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2003, The Mars Volta is now selling out every show on their own U.S. tour. Bandmates Isaiah Ikey Owens, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala combine hardcore, progressive/psychedelic rock and free jazz to the delight of critics and crowds. Their new album, Frances the Mute, garnered a 4-star rating from Rolling Stone and scored #4 on the Billboard Top 200, selling more than 123,000 copies its first week. Known for creating a warm atmosphere with his organ skills, Owens uses a Korg CX-3 Combo Organ on stage. He states, Playing live, all of the bands songs are pretty organ-heavy. The Korg CX-3 is kind of like the second guitar. Whenever theres a heavy part, Im playing the organ. A feature I especially like about the CX-3 compared to other organ modules is that I have the ability to switch the drawbar settings quickly. Once I set up my favorite sounds its like having another version of them immediately available. Owens plays with Free Moral Agents on the side and is also collaborating with artist/producer Danger Mouse. The Mars Volta have scheduled a Fall U.S. tour supporting System of a Down.
