New AMS NEVE Equipped Facility Opens In Bristol With Logic 1 Having built-up an impressive portfolio of experience at facilities in Hong Kong and Thailand, Neil Hipkiss has returned to the UK to set up his own independent operation in Bristol, Master Tracks. Selection of equipment was inevitably an important decision for the new facility. Hipkiss quickly established that the combination of a Logic 1 and AudioFile SC would fit most closely with his business plan to be a small high-end independent facility. Logic 1 is a complete digital audio post production system offering the efficiencies of integrated digital editing and mixing. The mixer features a familiar channel strip layout for control of up to 48 channels. Judging by his impressive client base and project list, Hipkiss has made the right choice. Hipkiss has been working non-stop since setting up the facility. The Logic 1 and AudioFile SC have been kept busy on a variety of programmes from natural history to documentaries. One recent project, Lion Battlefields, featured more than 3000 events, giving Hipkiss a chance to really put the AudioFile SC through its paces. Hipkiss was extremely impressed at how easily the AudioFile SC rose to the challenge, performing at the same speed as a programme with just a handful of events. Lion Battlefields has been highly commended by BBC2 Management who have said it was the best Natural History programme they'd seen in years. Other projects keeping Hipkiss busy at the moment include The 50s and 60s in Living Colour and Married Love for Testimony Films; and A Queen's Own Kingdom for the BBC. To find out more about Master Tracks visit www.dubbingmixer.com ^BACK UP^ Producer Manager Matthew Freeman Surfaces, Joins Hits Mag Matthew Freeman formally of Lippman Ent. has recently joined forces with Hits Magazine. The system generates optimized voice signals for the car phone and the voice control system; most new E-Class vehicles leave the factory equipped with this system. Mercedes-Benz S-Class and CL-Class cars will soon be available with this option. The cult status of the Mercedes-Benz brand is largely due to the use of exceptional technologies, (e.g., ABS) many of which were first used in a Mercedes car. As competition gets tougher, leadership in engineering and innovation is the only way to stay ahead of competitors. Of course, this also applies to automotive telematics. A mobile phone, navigation system and Internet access will be standard on most automobiles in the not-too-distant future. Microphones, as part of the human-machine interface, play an integral role in this development. The AKG array microphone delivers voice signals of considerably improved audio quality to the car phone and to the Linguatronic voice control system in the new E-Class vehicles. This is the first time that Linguatronic also controls the navigation system in addition to the radio, CD player and mobile phone. An array microphone uses four microphones feeding a digital signal processor to provide higher directivity for better elimination of unwanted noise. The array microphone owes its capabilities to the fact that a sound wave, depending on its angle of incidence, will hit each microphone in the array at a different time. Depending on the angle of incidence of a sound, the vector addition of the individual microphone systems either boosts or attenuates the output signal. AKG supplies the microphone module consisting of four individual microphones installed in the rear-view mirror and the control unit containing the electronic circuitry and software for digital signal processing and interfacing with the rest of the vehicle electronics. With this development, AKG makes a major contribution to improved driving convenience and greater safety in a highly innovative automobile. The installation of array microphones in E-Class cars marks a highlight in the cooperation between Mercedes-Benz and AKG that began ten years ago with the use of Q400 hands free microphones. An important milestone was the introduction in 1998 of the Q500 panel-mount microphone for the new S-Class fleet. By now, AKG microphones are installed in all Mercedes-Benz models from the A-Class through the S-Class to the gullwing-door SLR that will be built by McLaren in the UK from 2003. AKG Acoustics, U.S. is located at 914 Airpark Center Drive, Nashville, TN 37217. The telephone number is 615-620-3800. The web address is www.akgusa.com. ^BACK UP^ Kutmasta Kurt Enjoys Huge Success With Linkin Park Remix KutMasta Kurt is enjoying huge crossover success with his remix of Linkin Park's "Enth E Nd" from their Reanimation CD. Sorrell announced today that five of the largest U.S. distributors of prerecorded music CDs and three large retailers agreed to pay $67,375,000 in cash, to donate music CDs to charities, and not to engage in sales practices that allegedly led to artificially high retail prices for music CDs. Vermont, along with 39 other states and three territories filed an antitrust lawsuit in federal court in August 2000. The lawsuit alleged that the five music distributors (including their affiliated labels) and three large music retailers entered into illegal conspiracies to raise the price of prerecorded music to consumers. The plaintiffs also alleged that price competition among music CD retailers was reduced as a direct result of the conspiracy. The defendants in the lawsuit are music distributors Bertelsmann Music Group, Inc., EMI Music Distribution, Warner-Elektra-Atlantic Corporation, Sony Music Entertainment, Inc., Universal Music Group and national retail chains Transworld Entertainment Corporation, Tower Records, and Musicland Stores Corporation. The defendants deny these allegations. Today's settlement has three major components: Sales Practice Changes: Defendants have agreed to an injunction preventing them from forcing retailers to increase CD prices and ensuring strong price competition between defendants; Consumer Compensation: The $67,375,000 will be used for consumer compensation, charitable purposes, or some combination of both. Notice of how to file a claim will be provided to the public at a later date; CDs for Charitable Groups: Defendants will provide approximately 7,000,000 music CDs for distribution to not-for-profit corporations, charitable groups and governmental entities such as schools and libraries for the benefit of all consumers in each state. In May 2000, the FTC resolved an investigation involving defendant music distributors minimum advertised pricing policies by obtaining injunctive relief. Unlike the present case, no monetary relief was obtained by the FTC. ^BACK UP^ Submissions Posted Oct 5th Count For RPM's Unsigned Vol. 2 There is only 1 week left to submit your music for Volume 2 in the RPM Direct Presents: Unsigned compilation CD series!
