The Recording Industry Loses Another Dear Friend
Beloved mastering engineer Denny Purcell was found dead Thursday, August 22 in the offices of his Georgetown Masters studio in Nashville. He was 51. The cause of death was not immediately known, but was likely caused by heart failure or stroke, according those close to Purcell. ''The high quality mastering community is very small here in Nashville. And he was one of, if not the, best,'' said Alan Stoker, recording curator at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Denny's career spanned 3 decades, with a start in Nashville at historic Woodland Studios. He later founded Georgetown in 1985. In 1998, Georgetown won Billboard magazine's Mastering Facility of the Year award. During his career Denny mastered more than 8,000 albums, including close to 500 that went gold or platinum. His client list included almost every significant country artist of recent decades, from Neil Young to Garth Brookes to Vince Gill. "The mastering process is like framing a beautiful piece of art," Gill said. "He really cared about it. What a great lover of music. He would listen in an entirely different way than most people would. I just trusted him." Denny said in a July interview that his business had suffered as a result of the weak country music economy but that he'd found new opportunities in emerging surround-sound formats. Recently, he remastered historic rock albums by Neil Young, Van Morrison and others into new, high-definition digital formats. ''He was in the best spirits in the six months I've known him,'' said new Georgetown vice president Andrew Mendelson. ''Business was starting to pull out of a slump. Things were going great.'' A memorial service was held on Monday, August 26 at Nashville's Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens and Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Collaborative Campaign, Attn: Yvonne Moneypenny, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, 801 Oxford House, 1313 21st Ave. S., Nashville, Tenn. 37232-4753.

RIAA Website Hacked For Third Time
The Record Industry Association of America's (RIAA) official website was hit for a third time by hackers who once again rewrote the content on the music lobby's site. This time their attacks were carried out over the holiday weekend insuring that the hack would last longer until someone in the organization cuts short their vacation weekend to correct it. This is now the third time in a month that the site has been breached by intruders. The first was a DdOS attack that brought the entire system down for a couple of days. The second, like the present attack, rewrote content on the site, seeming a protest against the stand the organization and the industry it represents has taken to control Net music. This time the rewritten content read: "RIAA against music sharing? Not anymore! RIAA to sue music sharers? Not Anymore With the legal file sharing service kazaa still online, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) today announced that it intends to offer the latest albums for download from riaa.org. As you are probably aware, the RIAA has been pursuing a policy of preventing this activity in recent months. We have recently become aware that this approach is yielding only limited results and in some cases may in fact be harming sales and the artists' revenue stream. The RIAA wishes to apologize for the heavy-handed manner in which the popular Chinese site Listen4Ever was closed down, and would like to present the following items for free download as a token of its goodwill. Of course the list is relatively small, but please be patient - we expect to offer over 300 next week. We also intend to offer pre-released movies in the coming months. If what you want isn't on the list, then please try Kazaa Lite - available here" Listed below the above parody were 20 links to download songs by Linkin Park. These files were also loaded on the RIAA site under a Napster archive directory. Classic. For more information check out Boycott-RIAA.

Walters-Storyk Design Group Fine Tunes Engine Room Audio Engine Room Audio, a full-service audio production facility located on the border of NY's colorful Soho and Chinatown districts, has introduced a new state-of-the-art mastering lab. Walters-Storyk Design Group principal architect John Storyk completed the acoustical design and installation; following original construction consultation by Chris Bowman of CHBO. Engine Room owner/head engineer Mark Christensen reports that the mastering suite represents the final step in the development of the young facility: "We opened our new facility about a year ago with six editing rooms, two live rooms, and duplication services. When we entered the final stage of the build, our budget was stretched pretty thin. We weren't planning to build a room of this caliber, but Chris convinced me that with John's help this could become an A-list room. "Our old facilities primarily targeted small scale projects and duplication clients," continues Christensen. "When we built this room, our intention was to construct a high-end mastering suite to cater to our growing downtown clientele. We wanted to create a top-of-the-line room that was accessible to independent as well as major label projects." The room features a hybrid of digital and analog gear including a SADiE 24/96 digital audio workstation and a host of classic TubeTech, Manley, Universal Audio, Ampex, Avalon, Waves, and Crane Song outboard gear. CHBO oversaw the initial design phases, including the construction of the isolated acoustic shell. WSDG completed the design with interior room acoustics including a number of cutting-edge acoustical accouterments. "The room is spectacular–it sounds phenomenal and looks great," Christensen claims. The feedback has been very positive." Recent mastering projects completed at Engine Room Audio include: a J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.) produced album from recording artist Tony Jarvis, several classical music albums for Museovitch Productions, the new Goat CD produced by Tony Mangurian (Veruca Salt), and a number of assignments for Hong Kong-based alternative dance label, Respect Music, Inc. Celebrating its 33nd anniversary, the Walters-Storyk Design Group has designed over 1400 media production facilities in the U.S., the Far East and South America. Their credits range from the original Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland Studio and Howard Schwartz Recording complex (NY) to Synchrosound in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Argentina's Circo Beat Studios. Recent projects include: film composer Carter Burwell's Tribeca NY studio, a facility for recording artist Paul Winter, the cutting-edge Interlochen, MI, Public Radio complex, Thirteen/WNET NY's new 5.1 audio suite, and Tim Mosley's new Timbaland Studios. ^BACK UP^
London's Mark Angelo Studios Has Had A Busy Summer
It's been a very busy summer at Mark Angelo Studios. Dune Records booked time in August for vocalist Juliet Roberts to record an album. Juliet is an accomplished and versatile singer and with a string of hits to her credit. Mark Angelo is always popular with producers of music for film and television. Jah Wobble returned to continue 5.1 recording and mixing for the soundtrack to the forthcoming film, 'The Fury'. Producer Julian Litman also chose Mark Angleo's to record music for the popular television series '2000 Acres Of Sky'. In July, MA welcomed Dutch artists, De-dijk, who were working with producer Rafe McKenna. Nexus, the three girl R&B act who recently signed to in-house label, DCU Records, have wasted no time getting down to work in the studio. They have been busy writing and recording their debut album with Mark Angelo's MD, Mark Lusardi. John Lee Hooker tribute album "From Clarksdale To Heaven - Remembering John Lee Hooker" will be released through Blue Storm Music on September 24th. Glenwood Place Names Mitch Berger Chief Technical Engineer
With almost 20 years experience in the recording industry, servicing studios from Los Angeles to Miami, Mitch Berger has recently joined Glenwood Place Studios, as it’s new chief technical engineer. Berger, who spent the last 4 1/2 years at The Village Recorders in West L.A., where he was responsible for maintenance, session set up confirmation as well as new equipment installations and the creation of the facilities fibre networking system. "Along with the day to day operation of the SSL 9000J, Euphonix and AMEK 9098i rooms here at Glenwood, one of my goals will be to work on getting the fourth room on air by 2003," states Berger. "We're looking at an all Pro Tools suite with a fully equipped control room featuring a Pro Controller, Pro Tools HD and tracking capabilities." Glenwood GM/Studio Manager Kit Rebhun views Berger’s presence as a great addition to the facilities continued growth. "Mitch brings with him a wealth of technical skills that go beyond the average tech. He has worked with some of our industry’s most influential producers/engineers such as Roy Thomas Baker, Rick Rubin, Al Schmitt and T-Bone Burnett," shares Rebhun. "Glenwood’s clients know that with Mitch on their session combined with the best equipment and acoustics in LA they are assured of the best recording experience possible." Berger shares his enthusiasm about his current project, which involves the installation of a 64-input vintage customized Neve 8068. "Although the AMEK 9098i is a great sounding console we’ll be replacing it with the Neve. We've got a great tracking room and the demand was for a great tracking board. With the installation of the Neve this September we will offer clients the best in all worlds technically," says Berger. "I couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of one of our industry’s most cutting edge facilities." Activision Releases First Title Featuring DTS Surround Sound
Building its library of titles for PlayStation2, DTS announces that Street Hoops is the first title from Activision, Inc. to include DTS surround sound. An authentic and realistic street basketball game, Street Hoops is encoded with 4.0-channel DTS sound in the PlayStation2 version. Only games employing DTS Interactive technology allow PlayStation2 players to experience real-time interactive discrete surround sound during gameplay. Developed by Black Ops Entertainment, with audio effects by Tommy Tallarico, Street Hoops has a soundtrack featuring top hip-hop artists that comes alive in DTS sound. Players need only select DTS from the audio menu and hook their PlayStation2 up to a DTS-capable surround sound system to feel like they are actually on the basketball court. The game also includes a secret DTS-uniformed team that players can select via "cheat codes." "Today, more and more developers and players are realizing how DTS surround sound can enhance a game," said Jon Kirchner, President and CEO of DTS. "It is great to work with companies like Activision that want to push the audio envelope in gameplay." "Activision creates titles that offer the best gaming experience possible," said Will Kassoy, vice president, Global Brand Management, Activision, Inc. "DTS Interactive surround sound puts the player right into the game. Players can hear the crowds and comments around them, sense when someone is coming from behind, and feel the ambient sound in whatever environment they are playing." Introduced in September 2001, the DTS Interactive software developers kit (SDK) is available to game developers directly through their respective territories' PlayStation2 developer Web sites. In addition to Street Hoops, there are currently four DTS-encoded PlayStation2 titles available: SSX Tricky, NHL 2002, Sled Storm and Pirates: Legend of Black Kat (all from Electronic Arts.)
